The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams compare a cafe, how it looked before renovation and afterwards.

Overall, kitchen and staff dinning rooms were transformed. Main hall had minor add-ons and outside sitting introduced for customers.

Before, cafe's major area wasn't utilized properly as main hall was only covered with sitting area and a small recycling bin. Later on, a salad bar and more dustbins were added to the main hall covering the free area. Area occupied for staff dinning rooms then converted into food take away and a coffee bar.

Kitchen's serving area having all food and drink now providing hot meals.

Two new entrances were built one near the toilets for the ease of customers sitting outside as open air Barbecue is added to cafe menu. Consumers can now also use door near salad bar for easy access to food court. Customers can now enjoy weather as outdoor sitting space for 26 people with 5 tables is introduced where they can enjoy their food under the sky.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You provide a clear overview of the main changes, noting that the former staff dining rooms became takeaway and coffee areas and that outdoor seating was introduced. You also accurately mention the kitchen’s change from serving all food and drink to hot meals, and the addition of a salad bar. This covers the task well, with some key comparisons selected. However, a few details are inaccurate or unclear: the original feature was a bin, not a recycling bin, and the new outdoor area has four tables, not five; the plan does not state a capacity of 26 people. The claim that a new entrance was added near the toilets is also misleading: two doors lead from the southern wall to the outdoor area. More precise reporting of these features would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes inside and outside the café. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression within the body is uneven, and some connections are difficult to follow. For example, the sentence beginning “Before, cafe’s major area…” combines the seating area, bin, salad bar and dustbins without clearly distinguishing what existed before from what was added. “Two new entrances” then introduces another change without a clear link to the previous point. Use a more systematic order—north side, central and western areas, then the southern exterior—and connect each comparison explicitly. This would make the organisation clearer and reduce the impression of loosely joined details.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “renovation,” “transformed,” “serving area,” “hot meals,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal for a plan description: “dustbins” does not precisely describe the labelled recycling bins, “sitting area” is less suitable than “seating area,” and “enjoy weather” and “under the sky” sound unnatural. “Food court” is also not shown on the plan; “café” or “serving area” would be more accurate. Aim for precise labels from the diagram and conventional collocations, rather than adding promotional language about customers’ experience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex structures, including the contrast in “Kitchen’s serving area … now providing hot meals” and the sentence describing the outdoor space. The main message is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors and sentence fragments reduce clarity. “Overall, kitchen and staff dinning rooms were transformed” needs articles, while “Main hall had minor add-ons” also lacks an article. “Kitchen’s serving area having all food and drink now providing hot meals” is not a complete sentence because it has no finite verb. In “Customers can now enjoy weather as outdoor sitting space … is introduced,” the clause is awkwardly joined and the tense is inconsistent with the completed redesign. Build complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check articles and tense choices.
