Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify some key features, including the kitchen, seating area, toilets, hot-meal counter and the addition of outdoor facilities. However, the comparison is only partial and several details are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the recycling bins were not in the old café; there was a single bin, which was replaced by recycling bins. The two staff dining rooms and their replacement by takeaway food and a coffee bar are omitted, as are the new southern doors and the barbecue’s position. The overview that there is “no huge different” also understates the redesign. To strengthen the report, give a clear overview of the main changes and describe the most significant alterations accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it begins with an introduction, uses paragraphs to discuss the earlier and current layouts, and includes an overall comment. However, the progression is not consistently clear, and the final overview repeats a general point rather than bringing the main comparisons together. Linking phrases such as “and now” and “in place of” help show contrast, but several sentences join multiple locations without clear relationships, as in “in the left side of kitchen and chairs there is salad bar.” Plan the report around a concise overview followed by grouped comparisons—for example, changes to the north and west sides, then the unchanged facilities and outdoor additions. This would make the relationships between features easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “kitchen,” “serving area,” “toilets,” “salad bar” and “barbecue.” However, the range is limited, and several word choices or phrases are inaccurate or awkward, which sometimes makes the layout difficult to understand. “One big table and chairs room” does not clearly describe the central seating area, while “somany sitting areas” is vague and does not accurately identify the outdoor tables. There are also spelling and word-form problems, such as “different” where a noun is needed and “infront.” Build a more precise set of location and change expressions, such as “along the western wall,” “was replaced by,” and “outdoor seating area,” and check spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates its basic meaning through mostly simple sentences, but the range of structures is limited and errors occur frequently. The opening, “The plans below compares,” has subject–verb disagreement, and “there has been added some area” uses an incorrect verb construction. Articles, plurals and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “one big table and chairs room” and the long sentence beginning “and now in the same place.” Capitalisation and punctuation need attention, including the lowercase “overall” and the sentence fragments created by loosely connected clauses. Practise accurate comparison patterns such as “The kitchen remains in the same position” and “The staff rooms were replaced by…” before attempting longer sentences.
