Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the topic and mention several relevant locations, including the kitchen, former staff room, toilets and outdoor seating. However, the comparison is very incomplete: the response ends before explaining most of the redesign, such as the take-away food and coffee bar, salad bar, recycling bins and barbecue. Some details are unclear or inaccurate, particularly the claim that seating is now outdoors; the central tables and chairs remain, with additional outdoor seating. The overview also does not clearly summarise the main changes. The response is 83 words, so it does not meet the 150-word minimum. To improve, give a clear overview and describe the key changes and unchanged features in both plans.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: you begin by introducing the plans, use “Overall” to signal a summary, and then add a further description. However, the ideas do not develop in a clear sequence, and the second paragraph stops mid-sentence at “the toilet was in the sou”. The repeated focus on the kitchen’s north-west position does not help the reader follow the changes, while links between the before and current layouts are limited. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and for the main comparisons, and group details by area—for example, the north side, interior and outdoor additions. Complete each sentence and use clear comparison links such as “whereas” and “in addition”.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant plan vocabulary, including “kitchen”, “serving area”, “staff room”, “toilet” and “outdoor”. These words show an attempt to describe locations and facilities, but the range is narrow and several phrases are imprecise or repetitive. For example, “now sitting is in outdoor” does not clearly express that outdoor seating has been added while indoor tables remain. “Cafe before redesign” and “now today cafe” are also awkward ways to refer to the two plans. Build a more precise set of terms for facilities and changes, such as “seating area”, “was replaced by”, and “was added”. Check spelling of “redesign” and use consistent forms such as “café” and “north-west”.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts connected sentences and an overview, but grammatical control is uneven. The opening, “The map illustrate a college cafe before it was redesigned now how it looks,” has subject–verb disagreement and an unclear sentence structure. In “Overall, the cafe before redesign the kitchen was in the northwest,” the relationship between the café and kitchen is not expressed with a complete grammatical pattern. The final sentence is incomplete, ending with “in the sou”. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent, including the fragment beginning “and the toilet”. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use simple comparison structures accurately before attempting longer sentences.
