Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main subject and report several relevant changes, including the kitchen remaining in the northwest, the former staff rooms becoming a coffee bar and takeaway area, and the toilets staying in the southeast. However, the overview is unclear and does not summarise the redesign’s main pattern. Some details are inaccurate or confusing: the serving area is described as being in the northwest, although it lies beside the kitchen, and the seating is not simply “in outdoor”; the central tables remain, with additional outdoor seating added. Important features such as the salad bar, recycling bins, and barbecue are omitted. To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of what stayed, what changed, and the new facilities, then describe locations precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: the response begins with an introduction, gives an overall statement, and then attempts to compare the two plans. However, the progression is difficult to follow because information is repeated and the comparison shifts between the old and new layouts without a clear structure. For example, “It can be clearly seen” is repeated, while the final sentence combines several changes in a confusing sequence. The use of “and” and “now” does not consistently show how features relate to one another. Organise the report into a concise overview followed by separate descriptions of the original and redesigned café, and use clear linking phrases such as “whereas,” “in addition,” and “by contrast.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “kitchen,” “staff room,” “toilet,” “tables and chairs,” and “coffee bar.” This gives the reader a basic sense of the facilities being compared. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or awkward, such as “now sitting is in outdoor,” “where the serving area change,” and “here is coffee bar.” Spelling errors, including “redesingn” and “dinning,” also reduce accuracy. Aim to use precise location and change vocabulary, for example “along the western wall,” “was replaced by,” and “an outdoor seating area was added.” Check spelling and use the labels from the plan consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to form longer sentences, but these are often difficult to understand because of frequent problems with sentence structure, tense, agreement, and punctuation. For instance, “Overall, the cafe before redesign the kitchen was in the northwest” lacks a clear grammatical connection between the café and kitchen, while “the kitchen were in the same place” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. The final sentence also joins several ideas without clear clauses or punctuation. Most statements rely on simple patterns, and attempts to combine comparisons are not controlled. Practise writing one complete sentence for each comparison, using accurate past and present forms, such as “The kitchen remains in the northwest, while the former staff rooms have been replaced by a coffee bar and takeaway area.”
