The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map shows how a college cafe has changed.
Overall, the cafe underwent significant development, with several new facilities being added and some existing areas being replaced. Tables and chairs remians in the same place.
Before cafe was redesigned, the serving area(all food & drink) was the part the kitchen. On entering the cafe, the bin was on the right side just outside the toilet. And two rooms were designated for staff dining rooms. Tables and chairs were placed in the main lobby.
After redesigning the cafe, two spatial rooms are converted to coffee bar and take away food. A salad bar is placed on west wall. New section named 'Hot meals' is placed in the kitchen. There is newly build large area for outdoor sitting with a barbecue section along with two new doors. Now there are multiple recycle bins on entering the cafe. Tables and chairs in the main lobby remains in the same place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You provide a relevant overview, noting significant development and that the central tables and chairs remain in place. You also identify several key changes accurately: the staff rooms become a coffee bar and takeaway area, a salad bar is added, and outdoor seating with a barbecue is introduced. This covers the main transformation, but some details are unclear or imprecise. For example, the original serving area is described as “the part the kitchen,” rather than explaining that the counter was relabelled for hot meals, and the new outdoor area is not clearly described as being outside along the southern wall. The entrance, toilets, and recycling bins could also be compared more precisely. The overview and relevant selections are effective, while fuller, clearer reporting of the layout would strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph about the original café and one about its current layout. This chronological organisation makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “Before cafe was redesigned” and “After redesigning the cafe” signal the stages. However, some links between details are awkward or unclear, particularly “the serving area… was the part the kitchen” and “Now there are multiple recycle bins on entering the cafe.” The repeated mention that the tables and chairs remain in the same place also uses space without adding much new information. To move further, group related changes more deliberately and use clear location-based references so readers can follow how each area relates to the building.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “underwent significant development,” “designated,” “converted,” and “west wall.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and the response generally remains understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “spatial rooms” is not a natural way to describe the former staff rooms, “outdoor sitting” is less appropriate than “outdoor seating,” and “multiple recycle bins” does not accurately name the recycling bins. “Large area” is also vague when describing the new outdoor seating. Aim for precise plan-description vocabulary and check word forms and collocations; this would make the account more natural and exact while retaining the range already attempted.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the sequence describing what happened after the redesign. Most ideas can be understood, but some grammatical errors remain and occasionally make relationships unclear. Examples include “Before cafe was redesigned” (missing an article), “the serving area… was the part the kitchen” (an incomplete or incorrectly formed relationship), and “Tables and chairs… remains” (subject–verb disagreement). The sentence “After redesigning the cafe, two spatial rooms are converted” also has an unclear subject and tense construction. Use consistent past-tense forms for the former plan and present-tense forms for the current one, and check articles, agreement, and sentence completeness. More accurate control of these patterns would improve clarity.
