Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the overall change from a basic café layout to one with additional food services and outdoor seating, and you mention several accurate features, including the kitchen and toilets remaining and the addition of a salad bar, takeaway food, coffee bar and barbecue. However, the account is only partly complete: it does not clearly describe the new outdoor seating or the two southern doors, and it misplaces the staff dining rooms by saying they were “in the middle” rather than along the north wall. Some comparisons are vague, such as “looked totally different,” and the overview’s claim that the café was “build completely separate” is unclear. To strengthen the response, give a precise overview and compare the main changes in location and function.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate descriptions of the former and current plans. This helps the reader distinguish the two stages. However, progression within the paragraphs is uneven: details are sometimes listed without a clear spatial order, and the description of the old layout jumps from the kitchen to the seating and then to the toilets. Linking phrases such as “In addition” and “also” are used, but they do not always clarify how features relate. The overview is also difficult to follow, particularly “college cafe build completely separate.” Organise each plan from one side of the building to another, and use clear comparisons such as “whereas” or “in contrast” to connect changes.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “kitchen,” “serving area,” “tables and chairs,” “salad bar” and “outdoor seating,” so the reader can identify several features. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations make the description unclear. For example, “build completely separate” does not express the intended change, while “places available” and “sites created” are vague for describing facilities. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “servving,” “toli ets,” “lpaces” and “Coffe,” which reduce accuracy. Use precise plan vocabulary and check spelling; for example, describe facilities as being “added,” “replaced” or “retained,” rather than saying they were “designed.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, but control is inconsistent, and errors often make relationships between features difficult to understand. Examples include “The plans illustrate a college cafe earlier and it was reconstructed and how it looks cafe today,” which has an unclear structure, and “the tables and chairs and Staff dining rooms was in. middle,” where agreement and sentence construction are faulty. Tense and article use also vary, as in “Kitchen and serving area … build on left top corner.” Some punctuation, including the full stop in “in. middle,” further interrupts reading. Practise clear present-tense descriptions of the current plan and past-tense descriptions of the former one, with complete sentences and accurate subject–verb agreement.
