The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans illustrate the layout of a college cafe before remodeling and how it looks at present time.
Looking at the details, before redesign college cafe had a simlpe layout. It had the indoor tables and chairs facilities and it also had two staff dining rooms where staff can sit and eat. Futhermore, it had a kitchen area and also had a serving area for all kind of foods and drinks. Moreover, there was a bin and toilets at the left corner in the cafe. After redesigning, there are sginficant changes in the layout of the cafe. Currently, there is addition of a salad bar section on the west side in the cafe. The staff dining rooms changed into take away foods section and a coffee bar. However, the tables and chairs remained same. Meawhile, the ordinary bin transformed into modern recycling bins. The most essential change is the outdoor seating facility which is added after remodeling. There is a addition of a barbecue section at the outdoor seating. While the serving area converted into hot meals point.
Overall, there are significant changes in the college layout after redesigning. The most important change is outdoor seating and in the indoor the staff room converted ino take away and coffee bar. In addition, there is a salad bar and barbecue section are interduced after remodeling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the main transformation and provide an overall summary, noting the new outdoor seating, salad bar, barbecue, and the conversion of the staff rooms into takeaway and coffee facilities. Most reported changes match the plans, and the comparison between the former and current layouts is clear. However, one location is inaccurate: the toilets are in the bottom-right corner, not the “left corner.” Some important details are also generalised or omitted, such as the two new doors to the outdoor area and the recycling bins occupying the former bin’s position. To strengthen the response further, describe the locations more precisely and distinguish clearly between features that remained unchanged and those that were added or repurposed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable progression from the former layout to the current one, and the final paragraph attempts to summarise the main changes. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “Meanwhile” help connect details. However, the first body paragraph combines both time periods, so the comparison is less easy to follow than it would be if the old and new plans were described in separate, clearly focused sections. The overview also repeats points already made, particularly the outdoor seating and converted staff rooms. Some transitions, including “However” before the unchanged tables and chairs, do not express a clear contrast. Group related changes by location or by whether they were retained, replaced, or added to make the progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “layout,” “converted,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating.” These terms communicate the main changes, but the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “at present time,” “all kind of foods and drinks,” and “modern recycling bins.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “simlpe,” “Futhermore,” “sgnificant,” “Meawhile,” and “interduced,” which reduce the accuracy and polish of the description. Aim for precise plan vocabulary and check spelling carefully. For example, use “the café’s current layout” rather than “at present time,” and “a food-and-drink serving counter” rather than “serving area for all kind of foods and drinks.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including “While the serving area converted into hot meals point,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, control is inconsistent, especially in articles, verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. Examples include “before redesign college cafe had” (missing articles), “the tables and chairs remained same” (missing “the”), and “there is a addition” (incorrect article). The final sentence, “there is a salad bar and barbecue section are introduced,” combines incompatible structures and makes the relationship between the ideas unclear. Practise checking each sentence for a complete subject and verb, and use consistent past and present forms when comparing the two plans. More accurate control of these basic patterns would make your comparisons easier to read.
