Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast between the original café and the redesigned one, especially the addition of outdoor seating, a barbecue and a salad bar, and the replacement of the staff dining rooms with takeaway and coffee facilities. You also note that the kitchen and toilets remain, and that the serving counter now provides hot meals. These are relevant features and give the response a clear overall comparison. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the recycling bins are not unchanged, but replace the single bin; the salad bar is along the western wall, not in the main area; and the new outdoor seating is not described in enough detail. To strengthen the report, state the main changes precisely and compare the layout more systematically.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has separate paragraphs and a recognisable sequence: an introduction, an overview, and descriptions of the old and new café. This gives it some organisation. However, progression is weakened by repeated points, particularly the outdoor seating and barbecue, which appear in both the overview and the final paragraph without adding detail. Linking words such as “although,” “moreover” and “however” are often used inaccurately or mechanically, so the relationships between ideas are not always clear. For example, “Although, they remove the staff dining rooms…” is not a complete contrast structure. Group the changes by location or by what stayed and what changed, and use fewer, more precise transitions to make the comparison easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “staff dining rooms,” “serving area,” “take away food,” “coffee bar” and “outdoor seating.” These terms help communicate the main changes. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, while spelling and word-choice errors sometimes make the meaning less clear: “comapre,” “thigs,” “limted” and “setting areas.” Some expressions are also imprecise, such as “many outdoor seating areas” when the plan shows one outdoor seating area with several tables, and “many new things are add.” Aim for accurate labels from the plan and more precise verbs such as “replaced,” “added” and “remained.” Check spelling carefully and avoid repeating the same general phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with contrast, as in “Although, they remove the staff dining rooms and add the take away food and coffee bar.” This shows an effort to connect ideas, but control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence structure and verb forms occur in examples such as “the new cafe has many outdoor seating areas” and “many things have replaced and new things are add”; the latter does not clearly express what changed. There are also repeated problems with articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, including “the college cafe plan has redesign” and the opening run-on sentence. Use clear past-tense forms for the redesign, and build comparisons with complete, controlled sentences—for example, “The staff dining rooms were replaced by a takeaway counter and a coffee bar.”
