The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams illustrates a cafe at the college before renovation and how it looks now after redesigning.
Overall, it is clear that the area became significantly more develop. The most notable transformation is the construction of outdoor seating and the separate section for everything.
In the first place, there were only few things. For example, kitchen with serving area where all the food and drinks served, staff dining rooms where staff of the cafe used to eat with some tables and chairs outside the rooms. There was toilet area where poeple freshed up themsleves and simple bin also placed near the toilets.
Regarding today's condition of college cafe, many things have developed and added and some are same as they were. Salad bar, barbecue and outdoor seating area is the most noticeable feature they have added. Serving area is changed to hot meals, dining rooms are changed to take away food and coffe bar and simple bin is changed to recycling bin. Kitchen, tables and chairs and toilets are on the same placed. Overall, it is now very convenient for both the staffs and customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall change—the addition of outdoor facilities—and compare several key features, including the conversion of the serving area to hot meals, staff dining rooms to takeaway food and a coffee bar, and the bin to recycling bins. You also correctly note that the kitchen, central seating and toilets remain. This gives the response a sound overview and covers the main stages of the redesign. To make the account more complete and precise, describe the layout changes more clearly: for example, the new salad bar is along the western wall, and the outdoor seating is reached through new doors in the southern wall, with the barbecue beside it. The claim that there is a “separate section for everything” is unclear and not supported by the plan.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a description of the former café and a comparison with its current layout. This helps the reader follow the before-and-after account. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In the first place” and “Regarding today’s condition” signal the stages, although some sound mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely. The final paragraph also places several changes in a list, so the spatial relationships between them are not always clear. Grouping the information by location—for instance, changes along the north wall, the western and eastern sides, and the new southern outdoor area—would create smoother progression. Use clearer references such as “these rooms” or “the former serving counter” to connect comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “renovation,” “construction,” “outdoor seating,” “recycling bin” and “changed to.” These choices communicate the main transformations, but the range is somewhat repetitive and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural. For example, “the area became significantly more develop” does not convey the change accurately, while “there were only few things” is too vague for a map description. “Separate section for everything” is also unclear. There are spelling errors in “poeple,” “themsleves” and “coffe,” and “freshed up” is not an appropriate expression for toilets. Aim for precise location and facility terms, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “The most notable transformation…” and comparisons such as “Serving area is changed to hot meals.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening should be “The diagrams illustrate,” because the plural subject requires a plural verb. In “there were only few things,” a determiner is needed, and “kitchen with serving area where all the food and drinks served” lacks a complete clause and appropriate verb form. There are also agreement and article problems in “Salad bar, barbecue and outdoor seating area is” and “on the same placed.” Practise accurate articles, verb agreement and complete relative clauses, while varying sentence structures.
