Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps compare the college cafe before the redesign and at present.

Overall, it can be seen that some major changes are there as barbecue, salad bar and outdoor seating are recently added. The bins are converted to recycling bins and staff dining rooms are transformed to take away food and coffee bar.

Initially, the cafe had kitchen and serving area for all foods and drink in the north direction. In the center, staff dining rooms were present with table and chairs. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main purpose of the plans and give a useful overview of the key additions and conversions, including the barbecue, salad bar, outdoor seating, recycling bins, and the replacement of the staff dining rooms. Most reported changes match the plans, and you correctly note that the kitchen and toilets remain in place. However, some locations are unclear or inaccurate: the staff dining rooms were along the north wall, not in the centre, and the toilets were in the south-east corner rather than simply “in the south direction.” The description also omits useful details such as the central seating area remaining and the outdoor tables. More precise comparisons and clearer spatial reporting would make the account more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the earlier and current layouts. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “Initially” and “In present” signal the change in time. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes list-like, and the repeated use of “direction” does not always clarify how features relate spatially. For example, the first layout description moves from the north to the centre, then south-east and south without consistently anchoring these areas to the building. Grouping features by location or by what changed versus what stayed the same, and using more precise referencing, would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “redesign,” “converted,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating,” so the main changes are generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are awkward or imprecise, such as “major changes are there,” “in the north direction,” and “the bin and serving area in transformed.” “Table and chairs” is also not the natural plural form for the furniture shown. Spelling errors such as “Enterance” and inconsistent forms such as “cafe/café” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise location language and natural phrases for describing additions, replacements, and unchanged features.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple statements and some more developed structures, and the overall meaning is usually clear. There are, however, several grammatical errors in sentence construction and verb forms. For example, “some major changes are there” uses an unnatural structure, while “the bin and serving area in transformed” is missing the correct verb form. Articles and number also need attention in phrases such as “had kitchen” and “table and chairs.” The sentence “The kitchen and toilets are at same place as before” also needs an article before “same place.” Practise accurate past and present forms when comparing the plans, and check articles, plurals, and sentence punctuation.
