IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pictures illustrate the older and new design of a college cafe. The cafe is more mordernised with different types of facilities than it was before.
Overall, the cafe is now expanded by including the outdoor space for seating and barbecue. The kitchen and the toilets remain unchanged while the other parts of the cafe show many differences compared to the previous plan.
The cafe has a new setup outside which includes seating area with the facilities of barbecue. In contrast, the kitchen and the toilets remain same as those were before. The bin is increased in number and developed into new recycling bin. Two doors are added to enter the main cafe from outdoor.
Moreover, the only serving area for all food and drink is transformed into areas for hotmeals. The staff dining rooms have converted into area for taking away food and coffee bar respectively. A salad bar has added to the main dining area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response gives a clear overview of the main transformation: outdoor seating and a barbecue have been added, while the kitchen and toilets remain. It also identifies the key changes to the former serving area and staff dining rooms, so the main stages of the redesign are covered. Most details match the plans, including the new recycling bins and two doors to the outdoor area. However, “the bin is increased in number” is not supported: the plan shows a bin replaced by recycling bins, without specifying an increase in number. The description could also be more precise about the salad bar being along the western wall and the outdoor tables. Overall, the main features are selected and compared clearly, though a few details are generalised or imprecise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into a brief introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing changes, which gives it a clear overall progression. Comparisons are signalled with phrases such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “Moreover,” and the reader can follow the main changes. However, the third paragraph repeats that the kitchen and toilets remain unchanged, a point already made in the overview, while some details are grouped loosely rather than by location or function. The reference in “those were before” is also awkward, and “Two doors are added to enter the main cafe from outdoor” could be expressed more clearly. This is a coherent arrangement with some effective linking, but cohesion and referencing are not consistently smooth or precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses a relevant range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “transformed,” “recycling,” “outdoor seating,” and “staff dining rooms.” These choices help communicate the redesign, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “more mordernised” is misspelled and imprecise, “increased in number” does not accurately describe the bin change, and “facilities of barbecue” is not idiomatic. “Hotmeals” should be written as two words, and “area for taking away food” could be expressed more naturally as “takeaway area.” The vocabulary is adequate for the task and includes some useful specific terms, but greater accuracy and more natural collocations would improve precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex forms, including “while the other parts of the cafe show many differences” and “which includes seating area.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the kitchen and the toilets remain same” needs an article or possessive construction (“remain the same”), and “A salad bar has added” is missing the passive auxiliary (“has been added”). In “The staff dining rooms have converted,” the passive form is also incomplete; use “have been converted.” The sentence about doors, “Two doors are added to enter the main cafe from outdoor,” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the doors and the outdoor area. More accurate passive constructions and article use would strengthen control.
