The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrate a college cafeteria before it was remodled and how it looks now. Overall we can see while many things like the kitchen, table and chairs and toilet is in the same place , few changes were made like the outdoor seating and barbecue was made as new addition.

Before the remodel After entering in the right there was bin after that toilet was istated. And if you look starightly from the enterance there are staff dining rooms just beside that common table and chairs are placed. On it's right there are serving area and after that the kitchen is placed.

After the remodel while the kitchen , common area and toilet was in the same place but serving area's were divied like before were it was serving area it transformed into hot meals, on it's left salad bar is placed. And where the staff dining room was sitated now its place for takeaway food and coffee bar.New area were constructed outside like the barbecue place and the outdoor seating. And the bin trasnformed into recycle bin.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall change: the café retains key facilities while gaining outdoor seating and a barbecue. You also report several accurate comparisons, including the kitchen and toilets remaining in place, the former staff dining rooms becoming takeaway and coffee-bar areas, and the bin being replaced by recycling bins. This covers the task well, with some detail beyond a basic summary. However, a few locations are unclear or inaccurate: the serving counter is not to the right of the tables, and the salad bar is on the western wall rather than simply “on its left.” The new southern doors and the four outdoor tables are also omitted. More precise spatial descriptions and a fuller account of the outdoor changes would make the response more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an overview followed by a description of the original plan and then the redesigned café. This gives the reader a basic sense of progression, and phrases such as “Before the remodel” and “After the remodel” help signal the comparison. However, the organisation within the two descriptive paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. For example, “After entering in the right there was bin after that toilet was istated” does not clearly establish the route or relative positions, while “On it's right” has an unclear reference. Some linking is also mechanical, with repeated “And after that” or “And where.” Grouping features by location and using clearer references such as “along the northern wall” would improve cohesion and make the comparison easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “remodel,” “serving area,” “outdoor seating,” and “recycle bin,” so the reader can understand the main changes. There is also some attempt to vary wording, such as “transformed” and “new addition.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “remodled,” “istated,” “starightly,” “sitated,” “divied,” and “trasnformed.” Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “common table and chairs” and “the barbecue place.” Use the labels from the plan accurately and choose standard map-description phrases. Greater control of spelling and more precise vocabulary for locations and changes would make the account clearer and more flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in “where the staff dining room was situated.” These attempts show some range, but errors in sentence structure and agreement are frequent enough to make parts of the description difficult to follow. For example, “the kitchen, table and chairs and toilet is in the same place” has a plural subject with a singular verb, and “the outdoor seating and barbecue was made” has the same agreement problem. The sentence beginning “Before the remodel After entering…” also lacks clear punctuation and a complete, well-formed structure. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
