The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps show the layout of cafe before and after its redesign.

Overall the cafe has been transformed from a basic dining hall into a more diverse food service area. The most noticable changes are removal of staff rooms, addition of specialized food counters and the creation of outdoor seating area. In addition to this now recycling bins are used.

Before redesigning the cafe was simple and had few options related to food and only inside dining available. Moreover only one and small serving area was present.Same one bin was used for the all type of waste.

After redesigning, now the cafe is much advanced with many facilities. Now we have many different kinds of food available in different separate section like barbecue, salad bar, hot meals, coffee bar. In contrast to that now cafe has out door and indoor seating. Also now take away food option is present which was not available in past.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You provide a clear overview of the main transformation, identifying the removal of the staff rooms, new food counters and outdoor seating. You also compare the café’s more limited former offer with its expanded facilities today, so the response addresses the key purpose of the plans. The main details are generally grounded in the visual, including the hot meals, salad bar, coffee bar, takeaway option and recycling bins. However, some descriptions are broad rather than precise: “many different kinds of food” does not explain the specific changes to the former serving area, and the barbecue is outside rather than simply another food section. Mentioning that the kitchen and toilets remain in place would make the comparison more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, an overview, a description of the former café and then its current layout. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “In contrast” help signal relationships between ideas. The organisation is effective, though the two detail paragraphs rely heavily on general statements rather than grouping changes by location or function. For example, the current facilities are listed together without distinguishing indoor counters from the outdoor barbecue and seating. Some transitions, including “After redesigning, now,” are awkward and repetitive. Grouping the changes more systematically and using concise references to the former and current plans would make cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “layout,” “specialized food counters,” “recycling bins” and “outdoor seating,” which helps communicate the main changes. There are also attempts to describe the café’s development, such as “transformed” and “diverse.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “advanced” is not a natural description of a café, and “different separate section” is awkward and repetitive. Spelling errors such as “noticable” and “out door” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise plan vocabulary and natural collocations, for example describing the café as having “a wider range of facilities” and referring to “separate food counters.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more developed sentences, including the overview sentence beginning “The most noticeable changes are…” and the contrast introduced by “In contrast to that.” The main meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Articles and noun forms are often inaccurate, as in “layout of cafe,” “a more diverse food service area” without a clear article pattern, and “different separate section.” Tense and sentence construction are also awkward in “After redesigning, now the cafe is much advanced,” while “Same one bin was used” lacks a clear grammatical subject reference. Review articles, plurals and consistent past-versus-present forms, and proofread punctuation and spacing around sentence boundaries.
