Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map demonstrates what changes are happen in college canteen and how its look before and after these modifications.

Overall, the old building look simple there were only one kitchen with one serving area for all type of foods and one big hall with table and chairs. However, the new building of cafe look completely different with multiple additions along inside and outside of it. Also this occupies more area on left side with extra seating.

Firstly, the previous cafe have few things inside without any outdoor expansion such as kitchen with serving area in on place together where all type of food and drinks were served. Moreover, two staff dining rooms with seating facility inside of it which located on the right side of the hall. Toilets on left just near the entering door followed by a bin.

Apart from this, a large proportion of current cafe updates a lot. Kitchen still on same place but serving area now serve only hot meals and three more food locations build one is salad bar to the other side of cafe and staff dining rooms are converted into take away food and coffee bar.

Remaining inner area looks same like the old one. But the outer area on left side expand with two updations: a barbecue section and outdoor huge seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation: the kitchen remains, the former staff rooms become takeaway and coffee areas, and new facilities are added, including outdoor seating and a barbecue. The overview also contrasts the simpler original café with the expanded current layout. These points address the task well, and the response includes relevant comparisons. However, several details are inaccurate or unclear: the staff dining rooms were along the north wall, not on the right, and the toilets were in the bottom-right corner rather than on the left near the entrance. The claim that the café expands on the left is also misleading; the outdoor area is to the south. More precise location reporting and coverage of the recycling bins would strengthen the account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the former and current layouts. This gives the reader a sensible route through the comparison, and transitions such as “Firstly” and “Apart from this” help signal shifts. The progression is not fully smooth, however. The final paragraph moves from the kitchen to several new food areas and then to the outdoor space in a crowded sequence, while “Remaining inner area looks same” is too general to clarify what has stayed unchanged. Some linking phrases feel mechanical, and references such as “this” and “the other side” are not always precise. Grouping changes by location and using clearer references would make the organisation more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “serving area,” “staff dining rooms,” “converted,” and “outdoor seating.” This gives you enough range to communicate the main changes, but word choice and collocation are often imprecise, which limits clarity. For example, “what changes are happen” and “how its look” are not natural expressions, while “two updations” is an unsuitable noun choice. “Food locations” is vague where the specific facilities could be named, and “huge seating” does not accurately describe an area containing tables and chairs. Aim for precise plan vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “facilities,” “seating area,” and “was replaced by.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “However” and a clause beginning “where all type of food and drinks were served.” Nevertheless, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to follow. Examples include “what changes are happen,” “the old building look simple,” and “the previous cafe have,” where tense and subject–verb agreement are not controlled. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “one big hall with table and chairs” and “all type of food.” Some sentence boundaries and clause structures are incomplete or awkward, particularly “Toilets on left just near the entering door followed by a bin.” Practise accurate past and present forms and build complete sentences before adding clauses.
