The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two diagram display a college cafe before and after it was designed.

Overall, although some features remained the same, the cafe has become more residential with the addition of some extra features.

In the original layout, the kitchen was adjustable to a single room with all serving area including food, drink and staff dining room. While, the table and chairs were occupied in the center of the cafe and it's opposite side is toilets and in the right side is bin.

After redesign, the serving room is replaced with hot meals, take away food and coffee bar. Table and chairs are remaining same in the center of the cafe, but bin is replaced with recycling bins. Toilets are also placed in the same position. Another noticeable features is that selead bar is added in the left side of the cafe. However, barbecue and outdoor sitting is also added in the cafe with extra two doors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation and give a clear overview: the café retains some features while gaining new food facilities and outdoor seating. You also accurately report the unchanged central tables and toilets, the replacement of the bin with recycling bins, and the new hot-meal, takeaway and coffee facilities. This covers the task well and shows some of the detail expected in a stronger response. However, several important spatial details are unclear or omitted: the two former staff dining rooms became the takeaway and coffee sections, the new salad bar is on the western wall, and the outdoor area is south of the café with a barbecue to its south-west. The claim that the café is “more residential” is also not a precise summary of its redesign. More exact comparisons would complete the account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the original and current layouts. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the comparison. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “After redesign,” and “However” help signal relationships between ideas. At times, though, the connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “While, the table and chairs…” is not a complete contrast, and “in the right side is bin” makes the spatial relationship difficult to follow. The final sentence combines the barbecue, outdoor seating and new doors without clearly explaining where each is located. Use clearer location-based sequencing and connect each change directly to its corresponding feature.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replaced,” “same position,” “center,” and “added,” so the main changes are usually understandable. There is also some attempt to use more specific terms, such as “recycling bins” and “outdoor sitting.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, including “more residential,” “adjustable to a single room,” and “selead bar.” “Serving room” is also less precise than the plan’s serving area, while “extra features” is vague. These errors sometimes make the description less clear, although the reader can generally infer your meaning. Build a more accurate set of terms for facilities and locations, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “although some features remained the same” and the comparison beginning “After redesign.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “The two diagram display” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “Table and chairs are remaining same” uses an incorrect verb form and lacks an article. The fragment “While, the table and chairs…” also shows difficulty joining clauses, while “Another noticeable features is” has agreement problems. Improve control of articles, plurals, verb forms and sentence boundaries. Aim to make each comparison a complete sentence; this will let your range of structures communicate the layout more accurately.
