Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the changes which have taken place for redesigning of a cafe in a college.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that the layout reveals the complete transformation of a cafe where in a new barbecue facility is open with outdoor seating, also new coffee bar and take away option is built in place of dining rooms.

In the opposite of kitchen there was a serving area of food and drink, but it was replaced by hot meals.A new salad bar is also opened in the western part of the cafe. The tables and chairs facility in the centre of the cafe remains the same.

Before redesigning of cafe there was no nothing outside the cafe, but at present a barbecue option is available for people with the sitting area. Moreover, two new entrances is also opened in both the outside direction. A new recycling bin is also introduced in the eastern part of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main transformation and several important changes: the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee facilities, the serving counter is replaced by a hot-meals counter, and outdoor seating with a barbecue is added. You also note that the central tables and chairs and the toilets remain, and that the bin becomes recycling bins. This gives a relevant overview and covers much of the plan. However, some details are unclear or missing: the two new southern doors are described as entrances “in both the outside direction,” and the outdoor area’s four tables are not reported. The kitchen’s unchanged position could also be included. More precise descriptions of these features would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and further details about the interior and exterior. The information generally follows a sensible before-and-after comparison, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “but” help connect points. However, the progression is not always smooth: the overview already mentions the barbecue and new facilities, then the final paragraph returns to the outdoor changes. Some links are also awkward or unclear, particularly “In the opposite of kitchen” and “two new entrances … in both the outside direction.” Grouping the interior changes together and then describing the southern outdoor additions would create a clearer sequence, with more precise referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “redesign,” “serving area,” “salad bar,” “recycling bin,” and “outdoor seating.” These terms make the main changes understandable, and you attempt to describe locations such as the “western part” and “eastern part” of the café. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, however. “A barbecue option is available” is less precise than describing a barbecue area, while “sitting area” is less suitable than “seating area.” Phrases such as “a cafe in a college” and “take away option” could also be expressed more naturally. Using precise plan vocabulary and avoiding repeated “new” would improve flexibility and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “the changes which have taken place” and a contrast with “but.” The main meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “for redesigning of a cafe” has an awkward construction, “where in a new barbecue facility is open” has faulty clause structure, and “two new entrances is” has subject–verb disagreement. There are also article and sentence-boundary problems in “hot meals.A new salad bar,” and “there was no nothing” contains an incorrect negative construction. Aim for controlled sentences such as “The café was redesigned, and an outdoor seating area was added,” checking agreement, articles, and punctuation.
