Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrates the changes that took place in the layout of cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Overall,it is clear that the cafe underwent significant changes during this period .The most noticeable changes were the addition of staff dining rooms are removed and replace by food and coffee bar .

Firstly , in past days cafe looked liked old and decent with small kitchen and serving area for all food and drink ,after that very large size for tables and chairs for customer ,cafe have also two dining rooms for staff ,while toilets build in bottom side of cafe and bin is located near to entrance .

Secondly, in present time cafe is very change with very advance facility, to start with kitchen size was same as past but serving area is converted in to hot meals , while some new areas are constructed like salad bar and barbecue side and big change like outdoor seating ,however tables and chairs area was same toilets was also same and bin is converted in to recycling bins .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation and provide an overview, noting that the former staff dining rooms were replaced by takeaway and coffee facilities. You also report several accurate comparisons: the kitchen and central seating remain, the serving counter becomes a hot-meals area, and the bin is replaced by recycling bins. This covers the task’s key changes and supports the stronger level of achievement. However, some important details are omitted or unclear: the new southern doors and outdoor seating with tables, and the barbecue’s position outside, are not described precisely. The claim that the café was “old and decent” is not supported by the plans. Include the major spatial changes more systematically and avoid subjective impressions to make the account more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overall statement, and two paragraphs comparing the former and current layouts. “Firstly” and “Secondly” help signal the sequence, and the reader can generally follow the before-and-after account. However, the progression within the paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and several ideas are joined in long, loosely connected sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “in past days cafe looked liked…” moves from the kitchen to seating, staff rooms, toilets, and the bin without clear separation. The overview also contains an unclear relationship between the dining rooms being removed and the new facilities replacing them. Use shorter, clearly organised comparisons and more precise referencing to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “layout,” “serving area,” “tables and chairs,” “toilets,” and “recycling bins.” These terms make the main subject understandable, and you attempt to vary your wording with phrases such as “underwent significant changes” and “converted into.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “looked liked old and decent,” “very advance facility,” and “barbecue side.” Repetition of “same” and “change” also limits precision. Choose neutral, plan-focused language and use standard collocations, such as describing facilities as “added” or “replaced,” rather than evaluating the café’s appearance. More accurate vocabulary would make the comparisons clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “while” and a sequence introduced by “to start with.” This shows some range, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “the addition of staff dining rooms are removed,” where the verb structure is faulty, and “tables and chairs area was same toilets was also same,” which needs clearer sentence boundaries and agreement. Articles and tense are also often missing or inconsistent, as in “layout of cafe” and “in present time.” Review subject–verb agreement, past-versus-present forms, articles, and punctuation. Building shorter accurate sentences first will help you express the comparisons more reliably.
