Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps compare the layout of a collage cafe before and after its renovation.
Overall, the cafe has undergone several significant chnages and including extra features. Firstly, the serving area of all types of food and drink was replaced by hot meals section. Then the staff dining rooms was removed and replaced by the take away food area and the coffee bar. After that, salad bar was the extra addition on the left hand side of the cafe. While the bin section was changed and now recycling bin were there. The one of the major changed is installing the barbecue and the large area for seating outside of the cafe.
In contrast, some section were remained unchanged after redesigned.Which include, the kitchen, the table and the chairs area and the toilet area. This were the changes which occured in the collage cafe after its redevelopment and some sections were remained unchanged over the time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main changes and provide a clear overall comparison: the former staff dining rooms become a takeaway area and coffee bar, and new outdoor seating with a barbecue is added. You also correctly note that the kitchen, central tables and chairs, and toilets remain. This gives the reader a sound account of the redesign. To make the report more fully developed, include a little more precise spatial information, such as the salad bar being along the western wall and the outdoor area being reached through new doors in the southern wall. The bin-to-recycling change is relevant, but could be stated more precisely. Overall, the key features are covered, though some details are generalised.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable progression: it introduces the maps, describes several changes, and then identifies features that stayed the same. This overall arrangement helps the reader follow the comparison. However, the change paragraph relies heavily on sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Then,” and “After that,” which makes the account feel like a list rather than a spatial comparison. Some links are also awkward or unclear, particularly “While the bin section was changed” and “This were the changes.” Improve cohesion by grouping related changes by location and using clear contrasts, for example, describing the north side and then the new southern outdoor area. A separate, concise overview would also make the organisation more effective.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “replaced,” “removed,” “recycling bin,” “barbecue,” and “redevelopment,” so the main changes are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “left hand side” and “extra addition.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “collage cafe” is not the intended term, “extra addition” is redundant, and “large area for seating outside” is less precise than the plan’s label. Spelling errors such as “chnages” and “occured” also reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, conventional map language and use the exact labels where possible, such as “outdoor seating area” and “salad bar.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast between changed and unchanged features. However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors occur in several sentence patterns. For example, “the staff dining rooms was removed” has subject–verb disagreement, while “some section were remained unchanged” uses an incorrect verb construction and plural form. “This were the changes” also has agreement problems, and the sentence beginning “In contrast” is punctuated as a fragment after the preceding full stop. Work on matching verbs to plural subjects, using active or passive forms correctly, and joining dependent clauses to complete sentences. More accurate control of these basic structures would make your comparisons clearer.
