The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two plans illustrate how a college cafe was before and after the redesignment.

Overall, the most significant change is the construction of the outside area where they added a barbecue room and outdoor seating. However so many things remain.

Before the redesignment, there were an entrance in the right and in the centre there are some tables and chairs, infornt of it 2 staff dining rooms and a bin and toilets, going stright u find the door of a kitchen and a serving area.

According to the development plan, right from the entrance they replaced the normal bins with a nature friendly one and the 2 staff dining rooms by a take away food and cofé bar, in front of it in the left they added a salad bar.In addition, tables and chairs in the center, toilets and kitchen remains however the serving area in the kitchen dosent appear in new plan it is changed by a hot meal area. Moreover, the most notable thing is the addition of a outdoor seating area with a barbecue corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main before-and-after changes and give a clear overview, especially the new outdoor seating and barbecue. You also accurately note that the kitchen, central tables and chairs, and toilets remain, while the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee areas. This meets the task well, and the range of relevant details shows some movement beyond a basic summary. However, a few descriptions are unclear or imprecise: “a barbecue room” suggests an enclosed room, whereas the plan shows an outdoor barbecue area, and “a nature friendly one” does not clearly identify the recycling bins. The serving counter is also described as disappearing, although it is relabelled for hot meals. More precise reporting of these details would make the account more complete and accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the original and redesigned café. This gives the reader a general progression from the former layout to the current one. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “According to the development plan,” and “In addition” help signal relationships between points. However, the description within the body paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several locations and changes are packed into long sentences. For example, “in front of it 2 staff dining rooms and a bin and toilets” leaves the spatial relationships unclear, and “right from the entrance” is not a precise reference. Grouping features by area and using clearer references to the north, west, and south would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “construction,” “replaced,” “addition,” and “remain,” and you attempt to distinguish the old and new facilities. This gives you enough range to communicate the main changes. However, several word choices or spellings are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “redesignment,” “nature friendly one,” “barbecue room,” and “hot meal area.” These choices sometimes make the intended feature less precise. “Normal bins” is also vague when the plan specifically shows recycling bins. Aim to use the labels shown in the diagram where possible, and check spelling and collocations. More accurate terms such as “redesign,” “recycling bins,” and “hot-meal counter” would make the description clearer and more appropriate for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “However” and a sequence introduced by “According to the development plan.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “there were an entrance” has a subject–verb/article mismatch, while “kitchen remains” and “it is changed” do not maintain consistent agreement and tense. The sentence beginning “Before the redesignment” also has an unclear structure, and several clauses are joined without clear punctuation. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions of the former plan and present-tense descriptions of the current one. Shorter sentences with clear subjects and verbs would help you retain your range while improving control.
