Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given plans illustrates a cafe of college before it was restructured and how it looks today.
Overall, the design of the college cafe is changed alot. Most of the reconstruction happend on the south side of the plan. Some of the points in the plan are still same as before.
The major changes happened on the south side of the cafe. Outdoor seating is constructed on this side. There is also barbecue point next to the outdoor seating on the south west side of the plan. The bin area now have more space with multiple recycling bins in place. On the opposite side of the recycling bins, salad bar is constructed. Staff dining rooms are changed to take away food and coffee bar. The serving area is now utilised for hot meals.
There are also some unchanged points on the plan. one of them is tables and chairs area which is still there but with less space as salad bar is constructed on the west side of it. Kitchen and toilets are also in the same place with no changes in space but there is a small door now on the left side of the toilets which was not in the previous plan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation clearly, especially the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue, the replacement of staff dining rooms with takeaway and coffee facilities, and the change from a general serving area to hot meals. You also note that the kitchen and toilets remain in place, giving the response a relevant overview and covering both plans. This is a strong account of the key changes, though some details are less fully or accurately developed: the recycling bins are described as having “more space,” which the plan does not establish, and the claim that the toilets now have a small door on the left is not supported by the visual. To strengthen the response further, describe the new southern access doors and the four outdoor tables, and avoid unsupported comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs covering changes and features that remain. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall” and “There are also some unchanged points” help signal the organisation. However, progression within the main paragraph is somewhat list-like, with several changes presented one after another without grouping them by location or explaining their relationship. The reference to “the opposite side of the recycling bins” is also not a clear way to locate the salad bar. Grouping northern, western, and southern changes, then using precise references such as “along the western wall” or “at the southern end,” would make cohesion more natural and spatial relationships clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a redesigned plan, including “restructured,” “constructed,” “utilised,” “recycling bins,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices communicate the main changes, and the response remains understandable. Some wording is imprecise or unnatural for this task: “barbecue point” would be better expressed as “barbecue area,” while “the bin area now have more space” is both an unclear description and an unsupported claim. “Some of the points in the plan” is vague; “some features” is more suitable. There are also spelling errors in “alot” and “happend.” Aim for precise plan vocabulary and check spelling, while avoiding more elaborate terms when a simpler, accurate phrase is available.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some more developed structures, including “which is still there but with less space as salad bar is constructed on the west side of it.” Most sentences convey the intended comparison, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The given plans illustrates” has a plural subject with a singular verb, and “The bin area now have” has the same agreement problem. Articles are missing in “as salad bar is constructed,” and “one of them” should begin with a capital letter after the full stop. The sentence about the toilets and the “small door” also combines several ideas in a way that is difficult to follow. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and use a wider range of accurately controlled complex sentences.
