The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The first map shows the cafe design before it was renovated or upgraded to the current design while the drawing below shows how the cafe looks like now. As you entered the building, bin and toilets are on you left. Moving forward, there are two dinning rooms for staff. outside of it there are tables and chairs in the lounge. A little ahead there are serving area and kitchen on right side. All the foods and drinks are available in the serving area. Once upgraded it has added more facilities including salad bar, barbecue point and outdoor seating arrangements. Instead of bin they have added recycling bin in renovated cafe. Along with adding facilities two doors are opened towards south to access barbecue points and outdoor seating. In this way we can see that cafe is not only renovated but it is extended with addition of more numbers of tables and chairs outside of it. among the redesign kitchen remained on the same place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes, including the new salad bar, barbecue and outdoor seating, the replacement of the bin with recycling bins, and the kitchen remaining in place. This gives the reader a relevant overall picture of the redesign. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bin and toilets were on the right/eastern side, not on the left as your description suggests, and the serving area and kitchen were in the upper-left rather than on the right. You also omit notable changes such as the former staff dining rooms becoming takeaway and coffee-bar areas, and the serving counter changing to hot meals. A clearer overview and more accurate comparison of the main internal changes would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a broadly understandable route through the café and then turns to the redesign, using signals such as “Once upgraded” and “Instead of bin.” This provides some organisation, and the final point about the kitchen staying in the same place is relevant. However, the account is presented as one continuous paragraph, and the sequence of locations is sometimes difficult to follow: “As you entered” and “Moving forward” do not clearly orient the reader to the plan. Several ideas are joined in long or loosely connected sentences, while “In this way” and “Along with” make the progression feel mechanical. Group the unchanged features and the major additions into separate paragraphs, and use clear comparisons such as “whereas” and “by contrast.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “renovated,” “facilities,” “recycling bin,” “outdoor seating” and “tables and chairs.” These choices make the general subject clear, and you attempt to describe both the original layout and the new features. Some wording is imprecise or awkward for a plan description, however: “barbecue point” and “outdoor seating arrangements” are less natural than standard labels, while “more numbers of tables” is an inaccurate collocation. “Dinning” is also misspelled, and “cafe” is inconsistently written without an accent, though the meaning remains clear. Aim for precise labels from the plan and natural collocations, rather than adding informal or vague wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is an attempt to use both simple and more complex forms, for example “Once upgraded it has added more facilities” and “In this way we can see that…”. The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems reduce clarity. In “As you entered the building, bin and toilets are on you left,” the tense shifts and the article and possessive are incorrect; “there are serving area and kitchen” also needs appropriate articles. The sentence beginning “Along with adding facilities” has an unclear subject, and the final sentence lacks clear punctuation and control of its opening phrase. Use consistent present-tense descriptions of the plans, check articles and plurals, and divide long sentences into complete, clearly punctuated units.
