Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the plans as a before-and-after comparison and gives a basic overview, noting that the kitchen, seating and toilets remain and that outdoor seating is an addition. However, it reports very few of the main changes: for example, the former staff dining rooms become takeaway and coffee areas, a salad bar is added, and the serving counter changes to hot meals. The final sentence is unfinished, so the comparison is not developed. The response is also 71 words, below the required 150, which leaves the task only minimally addressed. To improve, complete the report and select several key changes, accurately describing their locations and what stayed the same.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence is followed by an overall summary and then a further comparison. This gives the reader a simple starting structure. However, the progression stops abruptly at “As we can see the”, leaving the final paragraph incomplete and the comparison without supporting details. Connections between ideas are also limited; “while” in the overview does not clearly express the relationship between the unchanged features and the additions. Use a clear overview followed by one or two paragraphs grouping changes by area, and connect each comparison explicitly—for example, explain what replaced the staff dining rooms and what was added outside.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “kitchen area”, “tables and chairs”, “toilets” and “outdoor seating”, so the basic subject is recognisable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or awkward, such as “cafe condition by a map after redesigned” and “more additions in the cafe after redesigned”. “Chaires” is also misspelled, and “redesigned” is repeated rather than using more precise language for the changes. Build a small set of accurate map-description terms, such as “remained”, “was replaced by”, “was converted into” and “was added along the southern wall”. These would make the limited description clearer and more appropriate to an IELTS plan report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few different sentence forms, including “while we look at…” and “As we can see…”, and the main ideas can generally be understood. However, grammatical control is uneven. The opening sentence lacks a clear, well-formed comparison structure, and “The building remains the same like it was before the redesigning” has an incorrect comparative construction. The final clause, “As we can see the”, is incomplete, while the overview sentence joins several ideas without clear grammatical relationships. Practise complete sentences using accurate past and present forms, such as “The kitchen remained in the same position, while the former staff rooms were replaced by…” Check each sentence for a complete main clause before finishing.
