The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two pictures show a college coffe before and after it was redesigned.
Overall, it can be seen that the builiding kept it's main structure with some changes especially in the south part of it where a recycling bins, salad bar and a berbecue witth and outdoor seating were added.
The service area next to the kitchen is now used for the hot meals. The staff dining rooms is now used as two different rooms the left one is for the take away food while the one on the right is a coffee bar. It is noticeable that the bin room in the past is much smaller than the one existing now which is named the recycling bins. Also on the north side of the recycling bins there is the salad bar that did not exist in the old plan. The toilets structure and position is kept the same. Finally, a barbecue area is added with an outdoor seating this whole area weren't present in the old building plan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main transformation: the café retains its basic layout while the former staff rooms become takeaway and coffee facilities, and new food and outdoor areas are introduced. You also correctly note that the kitchen’s counter now serves hot meals and that the toilets remain in place. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the recycling bins replace the single bin rather than a “bin room,” and they are on the eastern wall, not north of the bins. The overview also says the changes are especially in the south, although the new salad bar and service areas are inside the building. To strengthen the report, describe the southern outdoor seating and barbecue separately and give a more balanced overview of the main internal and external changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable progression from an introduction and overview to descriptions of the service areas, bins, toilets and outdoor additions. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Also” and “Finally” help guide the reader. However, the information is presented in one continuous block, and some transitions make the spatial relationships difficult to follow. For example, “on the north side of the recycling bins there is the salad bar” does not match the plan and interrupts the description of the eastern wall. The final sentence also combines the barbecue and seating without clearly distinguishing their locations. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the detailed changes, and group features by location to make the comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “redesigned,” “service area,” “recycling bins,” “salad bar” and “outdoor seating.” These terms make the main changes understandable, and you attempt to describe functions rather than simply list labels. However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or imprecise: “bin room” suggests an enclosed room, while the plan shows a bin; “structure” is not the clearest term for the toilets’ unchanged position; and “berbecue” and “coffe” are misspelled. “This whole area” is also vague when referring to the new outdoor facilities. Aim for precise plan-description vocabulary and check spelling, especially for key labels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview clause “it can be seen that…” and the contrast between the former staff rooms and their new uses. The main meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “The staff dining rooms is now used,” the plural subject requires a plural verb, and “a recycling bins” has an article–number mismatch. The sentence “Finally, a barbecue area is added with an outdoor seating this whole area weren’t present” has problems with sentence boundaries, agreement and clause structure. There are also missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent apostrophe use. Review subject–verb agreement, articles with singular and plural nouns, and punctuation; these corrections would make your comparisons clearer.
