The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided plan illustrates a cafe of a college before it was redesigned and how it looks now. At a glance, there are many changes that have been witnessed in the cafe.
It is evident that, before it was redesigned, when we enter from main door, we saw two staff dining rooms which are now replaced with coffee bar and take away food. There were toilets on the north-east side of the cafe with bin next to the main gate. The toilets remained same, however, normal bin is replaced by recycling bins. A large place in north part of cafe in which there was the kitchen and serving area, the kitchen is remained identical, howbiet, serving area is changed with hot meals.
Moving ahead, the tables and chairs are also same at the center of cafe. the new salad bar is constructed on the southern side of the cafe. The new area is also constructed with outdoor seating area, and a barbecue on the right side of door.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes, including the replacement of the staff dining rooms with a coffee bar and takeaway section, the change from a general serving area to hot meals, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue. You also note that the kitchen, central tables and chairs, and toilets remain. However, some locations are inaccurate: the toilets are in the south-east corner, not the north-east, and the salad bar is on the western wall, not the southern side. The barbecue is to the south-west of the building, rather than simply on the right of the door. The overview is also general; a clearer summary of the main changes would make the report more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: it begins with a general introduction, describes changes inside the café, and then mentions the new outdoor area. Linking phrases such as “At a glance” and “Moving ahead” help signal progression, and the reader can follow the main comparisons. However, the sequence sometimes makes relationships between features unclear. For example, “when we enter from main door” is not a precise way to orient the reader, and the paragraph moves between the entrance, toilets, bin, and kitchen without a consistent spatial route. The final paragraph also combines the unchanged seating with new features. Grouping unchanged features separately from additions, and using clearer location references, would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replaced,” “remained,” “constructed,” and “outdoor seating.” These choices allow you to report both changes and features that stayed the same. Some wording is imprecise or unnatural, however: “a large place” does not clearly describe the kitchen and serving area, while “normal bin” is less suitable than a more specific description. “The new area is also constructed with outdoor seating area” is awkward and repetitive. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “howbiet.” Aim for precise plan vocabulary and natural collocations, for example “located,” “converted into,” and “an outdoor seating area was added.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “which” and contrastive links such as “however.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “when we enter … we saw” shifts from present to past, and “the kitchen is remained identical” uses an incorrect verb construction. “The toilets remained same” needs an article, while “the new salad bar is constructed” would be clearer with an appropriate passive form and tense. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “the tables and chairs.” More consistent tense use and careful checking of articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries would make the description more accurate.
