IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the current technological era, people believe that the charm of visiting cinema is fading with the growth in being able to consume content from home. In this essay, I will address if the online experience is replacing the offline experience of watching a movie.

In the recent day and age, everybody is living a fast-paced life and taking time out to visit a movie theatre feels like a chore; reducing the visits there. It adds on to the exhaustion in their stressful life. Due to this, people prefer to watch content through online platforms as this saves their travel time and additional costs of watching a movie in a theatre. This is commonly observed in the younger generation currently.

However, the visitation to cinema halls haven't completed vanished. It is still relevant to majority of the public. Especially after COVID, people want to travel and go do activities outside of their house. This is one activity which brings people together and not to just share a meal together. The experience of going through the plot twists and laughter with friends and family still makes this important in recent times as well. In my city, Ahmedabad, there is not a lot of new experiences to have with people other than visiting different cafes, or a few touristy attractions; watching a movie in a theatre is still a very relevant activity here.

In conclusion, whilst the accessibility to watching movies has become convenient through the digitalisation, it does not fully replace the experience of watching it on a big screen with a group of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the topic and give a clear view that online access does not fully replace cinema-going, especially in the conclusion. The discussion of convenience is relevant, with travel time and cost as reasons people choose online platforms, and your Ahmedabad example helps illustrate cinema’s social value. However, the task asks you to discuss both views and the economic and cultural importance of theatres and cinemas. The online side is explained more fully than the cultural and economic case for cinemas; the latter is mainly presented as a social outing, with little about employment, local business, or cultural events. Develop these aspects and make your position explicit in the introduction to cover all parts more evenly and fully support your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a conclusion. The progression from the convenience of home viewing to the continuing appeal of cinema is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “However” and “In conclusion” guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. At times, connections between ideas are less smooth: “Especially after COVID” begins abruptly, and “This is one activity” requires the reader to infer its reference. The conclusion also repeats the central contrast rather than drawing together the economic and cultural points. Use clearer topic sentences and more precise referencing to make cohesion less dependent on basic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “fast-paced life,” “online platforms,” “plot twists,” and “digitalisation.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the local example adds specificity. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, but some word combinations and forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the charm of visiting cinema,” “the growth in being able to consume content,” and “the visitation to cinema halls.” “In the recent day and age” is also an awkward expression. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for established collocations such as “going to the cinema,” “the rise of streaming services,” and “cinema attendance,” and choose vocabulary that directly expresses the economic and cultural dimensions of the question.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “whilst the accessibility to watching movies has become convenient” and a reason clause beginning “Due to this.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some errors remain, however: “the visitation to cinema halls haven't completed vanished” has problems with agreement and verb form, while “relevant to majority of the public” is missing an article. The construction “Especially after COVID, people want to travel and go do activities outside of their house” is also awkwardly formed, and the semicolon before “reducing” does not correctly connect the sentence parts. Review agreement, articles, verb forms, and punctuation, while continuing to practise varied sentence structures.
