Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that theatres and cinemas are no longer essential in the digital age because people can enjoy entertainment online nowadays, while others think that theatres and cinemas still play an important role in both economy and culture. I firmly believe that theatres and cinemas are essential for preserving our culture, tradition and history.
Some people believe that theatres and cinemas are becoming less popular. In today's world, everyone is reliable on social media especially young people. They can watch movies, cinemas, dramas etc online without going outside because its quite convenient and comfortable. As they can watch all the entertainment they want online, it saves their time and money to buy tickets. Many people feel frustrated to book tickets online or to buy tickets outside the theatres as they they have to wait in a long queue. As a result, many people prefer online entertainment, which has reduced their need to visit theatres and cinemas.
On the other hand, some people believe that theatres and cinemas are still very important. They can reduce unemployment rates from society and contribute significantly to the economy. Theatres and cinemas preserve our cultural heritage and tradition. People visiting theatres and cinemas to watch entertainment can enjoy suitable environment, big screen and better sound quality.
In conclusion, although online entertainment has made watching films and other content more convenient, theatres and cinemas continue to play a significant role in society. In my opinion, they should not be considered outdated, as they provide economic benefits and valuable shared cultural experiences.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: theatres and cinemas remain important for cultural preservation and economic benefits. The online-entertainment paragraph gives relevant reasons, including convenience, saving time and money, and avoiding queues. However, several points are asserted rather than developed: for example, the claim that venues reduce unemployment is not explained or supported with an example, and the cultural value is mentioned briefly. The response is also one word below the required 250-word minimum; the eight words copied from the task prompt were not counted. To strengthen the response, explain how venues support jobs or preserve culture, and add a specific example to develop your position more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph presenting the online-viewing argument, a contrasting paragraph on the value of venues, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” make the main progression easy to follow. However, the body paragraphs read partly as lists of reasons, with limited explanation connecting each point to the central argument. The repeated use of “theatres and cinemas” also makes cohesion somewhat mechanical. Develop each paragraph around a main idea, then explain its consequence or give an example; use clear references such as “these venues” where appropriate. This would make the progression more sustained and the links between ideas less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “digital age,” “cultural heritage,” “unemployment rates,” and “sound quality,” so the main ideas are communicated clearly. There are also noticeable word-choice and collocation problems that limit precision. “Everyone is reliable on social media” does not express the intended idea; “relies on” or “uses” would be more suitable. “In both economy and culture” is awkward, and “suitable environment” is vague in this context. Some wording is repetitive, particularly “theatres and cinemas” and “entertainment.” Aim for more natural collocations and precise terms, such as “economic contribution,” “cinema-going experience,” and “online streaming,” while avoiding claims such as “everyone” when a more measured phrase is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a clear contrast in the opening sentence and a subordinate clause in “As they can watch all the entertainment they want online, it saves their time and money.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce accuracy. For example, “People visiting theatres and cinemas to watch entertainment can enjoy” needs a finite verb, such as “People who visit … can enjoy.” The sentence beginning “As they can watch…” also has an unclear subject relationship: the people save time and money, not the entertainment. There is a repeated word in “they they have to wait,” and “its” should be “it’s” if meaning “it is.” Review sentence structure and proofread for these slips.
