IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays people argue whether cinemas and theatres are still important to people.
On one hand, people admit that it is indeed this way: theatres and cinemas are no longer exciting for people, and they have some reasons for it.
First of all, it became easier to find any kind of entertainement online, you can turn on your device and find millions of movies, series and other exciting things. The only thing you need is one profitable subscription that may allow you to watch anything you want.
Secondly, it is time efficient. No more long queues to find a spot in a cinema, theatre or opera, no more waiting for advertisements in the beginning of the movie, and no more waiting for the transport to get back home afterwards.
But on the other hand people believe that cinema and theatre as a kind of art can not become unimportant. They also state some reasons for that.
And little do many people know, but such places have a huge economical and cultural impact on the society. As it was stated, watching movies in cinemas brings not only money to the rights owners', but also to people who work in cinemas. Going to a cinema is a small act of support for every person who is anyhow connected to you watching a particular movie. You support janitors and ticket-sellers, you support actors and directors.
Also it helps people to find the society of those who are interested in a movie or a performance.
I personally tend to believe that even though many people prefer watching everything from home now, cinemas and theatres are still a crucial part of art for our society. And I do believe that this form of art can not and will not stop being important for us.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the economic argument regarding 'janitors and ticket-sellers' is a bit simplistic. While the prompt asks for a discussion of both views, the arguments could be more thoroughly extended with more sophisticated examples or deeper analysis of the cultural impact. The position is consistent, but the overall depth of the essay is closer to the Band 6 level, as some points are stated rather than fully explored.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the two viewpoints is marked by 'On one hand' and 'But on the other hand'. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'First of all', 'Secondly', 'Also'). The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'economical and cultural impact' and 'crucial part of art'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'profitable subscription' (which should likely be 'affordable' or 'cost-effective') and 'find the society of those' (which is slightly unnatural). To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'it is indeed this way' (vague), 'the rights owners'' (incorrect apostrophe usage), and 'anyhow connected to you watching' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is mostly functional, but there are some minor slips. The control of grammar is sufficient to communicate the message, but the frequency of errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More complex structures are attempted, but they are not always error-free.
