Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that while some individuals think that in this electronic era, entertainment spots such as theatres and cinemas have lost their significance as people can access all resources on the internet, others claim that these venues still hold economic and cultural significance. Although both views have valid arguments, I firmly believe that these public places play a vital role in shaping the society and developing the economy.

In recent times, technology has advanced a lot and has made it more feasible for users to enjoy their favorite shows on various online platforms. The subscriptions of such platforms are offered at a very cheap rate thus people prefer buying them once instead of repeatedly booking expensive tickets for cinemas and theatres. Along with this, the web series released on online applications like Netflix have raised the standards as they are on another level of content creation. They sometimes overshadow the movies displayed in the cinemas and the plays presented at the theatres by achieving top ratings. Therefore, the current audience is more inclined towards online entertainment due to its low costs and quality content.

In contrast, the rest of the people contradict this perspective by stating that the cinemas and theatres still have enough potential to boost the economy as most of the older generations still choose to visit these places to enjoy themselves and spend time with their loved ones. This majority of people has a large proportion in the revenue generated by the entertainment sector, and this amount also contains a certain percentage which is payable to the government in form of taxes. These taxes later play a vital part in flourishing the economy and can also be used in the construction of more such venues to unite the society by public interaction and communication.

In conclusion, both the arguments make sense but they are still controversial. Although watching shows at home is a relatively cheaper option, but attending them in person is a far better experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction. The ideas are relevant, such as the cost-effectiveness of online platforms versus the economic and social benefits of physical venues. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding the economic impact of cinemas is a bit generic and could have been strengthened with more specific examples or deeper analysis of the 'cultural' aspect mentioned in the prompt. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two opposing views is handled well using phrases like 'In contrast'. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'Along with this', 'Therefore', and 'Although'. However, there is a slight mechanical feel to some of the linking, and the conclusion is a bit abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument, justifying a Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You use some good collocations like 'electronic era', 'content creation', and 'boost the economy'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive or could be more precise (e.g., 'entertainment spots' could be 'cultural institutions'). There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, and the range is adequate to convey your ideas clearly. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated, topic-specific terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over grammar, and most sentences are clear. However, there are some minor errors, such as 'the subscriptions of such platforms are offered at a very cheap rate thus people prefer' (missing punctuation before 'thus') and 'in form of taxes' (should be 'in the form of'). Additionally, the final sentence contains a redundant 'but' after 'Although'. Despite these occasional slips, the errors do not impede communication, and you show a good command of sentence variety.
