Student answer (Band 7.0)

People hold different opinions about whether theatres and cinemas are no longer important. Few individuals claimed that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all stuff online. However, others argue that theatres and cinemas remain valuable as they contribute to culture and the economy. In the subsequent paragraphs, I will discuss both views and present my opinion on this.

To commence with, the digital era reduce the commute time and reduce pollution. In the past, people often go to visit cinema complexes and theatres to watch movies and theme plays, which sometimes required long journeys through heavy traffic. Nowadays, they can enjoy the same content online, saving both time and effort. For example, a person going to a cinema complex spends time in traffic and also burns fuel, whereas a person sitting at home spends their leisure time watching movies or pursuing other hobbies. Therefore, many people now prefer online entertainment because it saves time, reduces pollution, and offers greater convenience than visiting theatres and cinemas.

Conversely, theatres and cinemas are still plays essential role in our lives. Firstly, it helps to preserve the culture. As through live performances, one can still connects to our heritage culture. As, they showcase local history, language, music, and stories. For an instance, many theatres perform traditional plays and folk dances, helping preserve cultural values that might otherwise disappear. Furthermore, it contribute significantly to the economy by creating employment opportunities and attracting visitors.

In conclusion, although online entertainment is more convenient as it saves commuting time and reduces pollution, I believe theatres and cinemas are still important because they preserve cultural heritage and contribute to the economy by creating jobs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience of online streaming versus the cultural and economic importance of physical venues. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the economic argument is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples or deeper analysis. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your supporting points with more detailed explanations or concrete examples to ensure the argument is fully developed rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Conversely', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the use of 'it' in 'it helps to preserve the culture', where the antecedent is not perfectly clear. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'digital era', 'live performances', and 'cultural heritage'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'all stuff' (too informal) and 'theme plays' (unnatural collocation). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary and idiomatic expressions related to the topic, and ensure that your word choices are consistently formal and precise throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the digital era reduce', 'it helps to preserve', 'it contribute') and minor errors in article usage and phrasing ('For an instance'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for small slips will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
