Student answer (Band 6.5)

A number of people argue that with the introduction of online entertainment services, theatres and cinemas will no longer be relevant, while others believe that people will still in the theatre for the overall experience. Although online services are more cost effective, I firmly believe that watching a movie in a theatre is an irreversible and immersive experience.

Watching movies and series online is not only convenient but also budget friendly. A single monthly subscription can grant viewers unlimited access to movies across different genres. Additionally, there are no time constrains to watch a show, viewers can watch anything, at anytime based on your leisure time. Also, they can play and pause the shows, along with this we can have multiple breaks in-between the shows. For instance, on Netflix, if an urgent task arises while watching a movie on Netflix, users can simply pause the film and save it to watch later. Despite the advantages, I believe home viewing often lacks the scale and atmosphere of a cinematic screening.

On the other hand, cinemas provides an atmospheric experience to the viewers. Modern theatre are equipped with high-resolution large 8k projectors and Dobly Atmos sound system that invoke powerful strong emotions. Additionally some movies are shot in IMAX, in order to experience that you need to watch them in IMAX theatre. To add to this, theatre also provide various format to watch a film like 4DX, 3D and Infinity vision. This technology elevates the viewing event.

In conclusion, watching the films online save time and money but people miss the overall experience of the cinema.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the advantages of online streaming are well-supported with examples like Netflix, the discussion regarding the economic and cultural importance of cinemas—as requested by the prompt—is largely ignored. The essay focuses almost exclusively on the 'experience' of watching a film rather than the broader economic impact or cultural significance. To reach a higher band, you should ensure all parts of the prompt are addressed with equal depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' are used to link ideas effectively. However, the conclusion is quite brief and does not fully summarize the main points or reiterate the position in a sophisticated way. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'immersive experience', 'budget friendly', and 'high-resolution'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'time constrains' (should be 'constraints') and 'various format' (should be 'various formats'). Additionally, there is a slight repetition of the word 'movies' and 'shows'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing to demonstrate a more flexible control of language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'cinemas provides' (subject-verb agreement error), 'theatre are' (pluralization error), and 'save time' (should be 'saves time'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You show an ability to construct complex sentences, but you need to pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and plural forms to ensure accuracy across a wider range of structures.
