Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the past, cinemas and theatres were considered important in the society both economically and culturally. However, some people believe that going to cinemas and theatres were unnecessary as audience prefer watching their movies at home. This essay will explain both perspectives and present my opinion about it.

Some people argue that watching movies in cinemas and theaters are not as important as it used to be. With the advancement of technology, people start to prefer streaming movies and plays online. Streaming services and online-streaming platforms such as Youtube and Disney+ are widely used in every household. These platforms encouraged viewers to stay at home. Hence, lesser people would go and watch a movie in cinemas and theatres. Another reason is that it is much cheaper and convenient to just watch online.

Despite of these advantages, I do believe that cinemas and theatres will continue to have an important role in the society both economically and culturally. Regardless of the ease and convenience offered by streaming a movie at home, some people still crave for the complete experience of going to the cinemas and theatres with your family and friends. For example, in the Philippines, an annual film festival takes place every December. It is not just to showcase the talents for Filipinos in acting and cinamatography but also it is a time for families to bond over a good movie. In addition, as people continuously support and watch movies in cinemas also help people by giving them employment opportunity.

In conclusion, although there is an ongoing debate on whether cinemas and theatres are still important or not in today's lives, I strongly stand with my opinion that they will still remain relavant particulary in terms of helping to boost the economy and culturally.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of streaming services versus the social and economic benefits of physical venues. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the economic argument regarding employment is mentioned but not fully elaborated upon. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more detailed explanations or additional examples to support your points, ensuring that the discussion feels comprehensive rather than brief.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Despite of these advantages', and 'In addition' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the use of 'your' in the second body paragraph, which shifts the perspective unexpectedly. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the reader can easily follow the argument from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advancement of technology', 'streaming services', and 'cinematography'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'relavant' (spelling) and 'particulary' (spelling), as well as 'despite of' (incorrect preposition usage). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('cinemas and theatres were unnecessary', 'people start to prefer', 'movies in cinemas also help') and preposition errors ('despite of'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. Incorporating a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while maintaining accuracy, would help elevate your score in this criterion.
