Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this modern era, many people argue that technology has increased rapidly, whereas the biggest malls, cinemas, and movie theatres are no longer crucial in our daily lives. Many people watch movies through online platforms, while others state that both movie platforms and cinemas/theatres play a vital role in our daily lives. From my perspective, watching movies online is more beneficial. In the following paragraphs, I shall explain how watching movies through online platforms can be helpful.

On the other hand, the major advantage is that watching movies through online platforms such as YouTube and Netflix helps us to save time. Similarly, people do not need to go outside their houses; they can simply sit and watch whatever they want through online websites. For instance, nowadays technology has increased, and many free websites such as Moviebox allow us to watch everything on these platforms.

On the other hand, people argue that it is essential to go outside and watch movies in movie theatres, and cinemas are more beneficial. I think it has fewer advantages because some people cannot afford cinema tickets and rent. However, going outside and watching movies physically is significantly good for those who are talkative people. They can interact with other multicultural people and learn from them. For instance, communication skills can be improved through communicating with other people.

To conclude, while there are valid arguments on both sides, it is essential to consider the long-term impact and strive for a solution that benefits the individual as well as society as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments regarding online platforms are repetitive, focusing primarily on convenience. The discussion on cinemas is somewhat superficial, mentioning social interaction but failing to explore the economic or cultural significance mentioned in the prompt. The conclusion is generic and does not effectively summarise the main points or reinforce the stated position. To improve, you should provide more specific examples and deeper analysis of the economic and cultural impacts of cinemas rather than focusing solely on personal convenience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'On the other hand' to introduce paragraphs that do not necessarily contrast with the previous one. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. While the reader can follow the general flow, the relationships between ideas are not always clearly signposted. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, distinct focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'good', 'helpful', and 'important'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'talkative people' and 'multicultural people', which do not accurately convey the intended meaning in this context. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to the film industry, such as 'cinematic experience', 'cultural heritage', 'digital streaming services', or 'social engagement'. Focusing on collocations will help your writing sound more natural and sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'technology has increased' (which is imprecise) and 'watching movies physically is significantly good'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence variety is limited. You should aim to use a wider range of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, to demonstrate greater control. Additionally, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and word choice to reduce the frequency of errors that, while not impeding communication, do affect the overall fluency of the text.
