Student answer (Band 6.5)

Certain people believe that in recent times where technology is advanced, people do not need to visit theaters and cinemas since all entertainment they need can be found online. While others argue that theaters and cinemas are still needed both economically and culturally, I believe that there is less need to attend an architectural facility to be entertained.

In one hand, advancement of technology has made entertainment easier to access whenever a person is in need of it. This development has been confirmed to cut down the cost of visiting a theater or a cinema to be entertained. It is cost effective and flexible. Most entertainment facilities tend to be expensive and unaffordable for certain individuals especially the teenagers, however, since the advancement of technology, movies and shows can be found online, for example, Netflix. This app contains different movies and shows where people in all part of the world can be entertained.

On the other hand, going to a theater or a cinema to be entertained can be fun. Some people enjoy being entertained with strangers around them. More so, there is a better feeling of excitement when a person has the opportunity to see a live show or visit the theater, it feels more real and loud. In addition, theaters and cinemas are where certain people receive their daily income which serve as a means of employment especially for young people.

In conclusion, although theaters and cinemas are fun places to attend and serves as employment to people, I believe technology has solved the stress and cost of visiting those facilities and has made life easier and flexible concerning entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the economic argument regarding employment is mentioned but not fully explored or supported with specific examples. The discussion on the 'cultural' importance of cinemas is also quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or specific illustrations, such as the social impact of community cinema-going or the specific economic challenges faced by the industry in the digital era.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In one hand' (though this is a collocation error for 'On the one hand'), 'In addition', and 'In conclusion'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of linking words could be more varied and sophisticated. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the economic and cultural points in the second body paragraph is abrupt. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use terms like 'architectural facility', 'flexible', and 'employment' appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'In one hand' instead of 'On the one hand', and 'architectural facility' is a slightly unnatural way to describe a cinema. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary. The range is sufficient to communicate your message, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'serves as employment to people' (should be 'provides employment for people') and 'in all part of the world' (should be 'in all parts of the world'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. You have control over basic grammar, but to achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of minor errors.
