Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that theatres and cinemas have become less important because modern technology allows people to watch entertainment online. Others argue that these places still play a significant role in society. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe theatres and cinemas remain valuable.
On the one hand, online entertainment has become extremely popular due to its convenience. People can watch movies, TV shows, and live performances at any time without leaving their homes. Streaming platforms are also more affordable than buying cinema tickets, especially for families. Furthermore, viewers have access to a wide variety of content from different countries, making online services a preferred choice for many individuals.
On the other hand, theatres and cinemas continue to offer unique experiences that cannot be replaced by digital platforms. Watching a film on a large screen with advanced sound systems creates a more enjoyable atmosphere than watching it on a mobile phone or television. Similarly, live theatre performances provide a direct connection between actors and audiences, making each performance special. In addition, these venues contribute to the economy by creating jobs and supporting nearby businesses such as restaurants and cafés.
In my opinion, although online entertainment is more convenient, theatres and cinemas are still important. They preserve cultural traditions, encourage social interaction, and provide memorable experiences that technology alone cannot fully replicate.
In conclusion, while digital platforms have changed the way people consume entertainment, theatres and cinemas continue to hold economic and cultural significance. Therefore, I believe they will remain relevant despite the rapid growth of online streaming.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly discuss both views—the convenience of online entertainment and the unique cultural and economic value of physical venues—and provide a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples, such as mentioning a particular type of cultural event or a specific economic impact, rather than keeping the arguments at a general level. However, the position is consistent throughout, and the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is well-organized with a clear structure. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In addition,' which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The flow is smooth, and there is no evidence of repetitive or mechanical linking, making the text easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'digital platforms,' 'cultural traditions,' and 'economic significance' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and clear, it is somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations and idiomatic expressions, such as 'immersive experience' or 'the lifeblood of local economies,' to show greater flexibility and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay displays a good control of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although online entertainment is more convenient, theatres and cinemas are still important.' The punctuation is accurate, and there are very few errors. The sentences are generally error-free, which indicates a high level of control. To reach a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as inversion or more advanced conditional forms, to demonstrate full flexibility.
