Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is a point of debate whether theatres and cinemas are important or not in this modern time. A significant chunk of community welcomes conception whereas the remaining members oppose the same. I entirely accept the phenomenon and explain why in this essay.

There are numerous arguments which go along with my personal perspective. First and most prominent lies in the fact that there are several changes comes in everyone's life with the rise in digital technology such as mobile phones, laptop, and computers. Nowadays, every individual can watch new movies on their smart devices. People think if they can do same thing at home, then why should we go to cinemas and theatres which could also save their time and money. However, they can watch everything on the various sites such as Netflix, Prime, and Amazon with their own comfort place, either lying on the bed, or sitting on the sofa. In addition, today's time everyone wants comfort and peace, so they prefer to watch alone in their phones.

On the other hand, some believes that theatres and cinema still play a crucial role economically and culturally. Moreover, if we go to cinema for a movie with family or friends and spend time together, we create a lot of memory, which give us relieves from stress and balance our mental health. Along with this, you can watch movie with the concentration instead of thinking about the household chores and have a break from daily routine.

All the above discussed assertions lead to the conclusion, for some people theatres and cinemas are no longer important, whereas it is still important for many residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion. However, the position is not clearly articulated in the introduction; the phrase 'I entirely accept the phenomenon' is vague and does not clearly state which side you support. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat under-developed. For instance, the economic and cultural importance of cinemas is mentioned but not explored with specific examples or depth. To improve, ensure your position is clearly stated in the introduction and consistently maintained, and provide more detailed support for your arguments to fully address the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the digital argument to the traditional argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'First and most prominent lies in the fact that' and 'All the above discussed assertions'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the introduction where the 'phenomenon' is not explicitly defined. Improving the variety and natural flow of linking words would enhance the coherence of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'digital technology' and 'economically and culturally'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'welcomes conception' (likely meaning 'welcomes this concept') and 'watch alone in their phones' (should be 'on their phones'). The range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'there are several changes comes' (subject-verb agreement), 'some believes' (subject-verb agreement), and 'watch movie with the concentration' (article usage). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your points, they indicate a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and proofreading for minor slips in tense and pluralisation.
