Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people argue that theatres and cinemas have become unimportant in the digital age because entertainment is easily available online. Others believe these venues still hold economic and cultural significance. This essay will discuss both views before giving my own opinion.

On the one hand, online platforms have reduced the need for traditional theatres and cinemas. Streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube allow people to watch films and performances anytime and anywhere at a relatively low cost. There is no need to travel, buy expensive tickets or follow fixed schedules. For many busy individuals, this convenience and wide variety of content make physical venues seem outdated and unnecessary.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas continue to play important roles. Economically, they create jobs for staff, actors and technicians, while also supporting nearby restaurants and transport services. Culturally, watching a film on a large screen with high-quality sound or attending a live theatre performance offers a shared experience that home viewing cannot fully replace. The atmosphere, collective audience reaction and sense of occasion create a unique social and emotional impact.

In my opinion, both forms of entertainment are valuable and complementary. While digital platforms provide accessibility, theatres and cinemas deliver immersive experiences that many people still prefer for special occasions, such as major film releases or live plays. Rather than replacing each other, they serve different needs.

In conclusion, although online entertainment has clear advantages, theatres and cinemas remain important both economically and culturally. A balanced approach that supports both options benefits society the most.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. You have clearly discussed both perspectives—the convenience of online entertainment versus the economic and cultural value of physical venues—and provided a clear personal opinion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between the accessibility of streaming and the immersive, social nature of cinemas and theatres. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion provides a logical summary that aligns with the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, you could include more specific real-world examples, such as the impact of local cinema closures or the cultural significance of specific theatre districts, to further strengthen the support for your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth, using appropriate linking phrases such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect sentences and ideas without being repetitive. The paragraphing is logical, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, a personal opinion paragraph, and a conclusion. The flow of information is natural, making the essay easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the academic context. Phrases like 'immersive experiences', 'sense of occasion', and 'complementary' show a solid command of language. The word choice is generally precise, and there are no significant errors that impede meaning. To improve, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range. For instance, instead of 'important roles', you might use 'pivotal roles' or 'integral functions' to elevate the tone further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('While digital platforms provide accessibility...') and compound-complex sentences. The grammar is highly accurate, with very few errors in punctuation or syntax. Most sentences are error-free, and the control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is clear and professional, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence. There are no patterns of error that distract the reader, and the overall structure is sophisticated enough to support the arguments effectively.
