IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many people believe that theatres and cinemas have become less important because online platforms provide unlimited entertainment at home. However, others argue that these places continue to play an important role in society, both economically and culturally. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe theatres and cinemas are still valuable.

On the one hand, digital technology has changed the way people watch movies and other forms of entertainment. Streaming services allow users to watch films, TV shows and live events whenever they want. This is more convenient because people do not need to travel or buy expensive cinema tickets. In addition, online platforms offer a wide variety of content, making it easy for viewers to find something they enjoy. For busy people, watching entertainment at home also saves time and provides greater comfort.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas continue to offer benefits that online entertainment cannot fully replace. Watching a film on a large screen with excellent sound creates a more exciting and memorable experience. Moreover, theatres support many jobs, including actors, technicians, ticket sellers and other workers, which contributes to the local economy. From a cultural point of view, theatres also help preserve traditional art forms such as drama, dance and musical performances. For example, many families enjoy visiting cinemas together, while theatre performances often introduce audiences to local history and culture.

In my opinion, although online entertainment has become extremely popular, theatres and cinemas still have an important place in modern society. They provide unique experiences, create employment opportunities and help protect cultural traditions. Therefore, they should continue to receive public support even in the digital age.

In conclusion, while online entertainment offers convenience and variety, theatres and cinemas remain economically and culturally significant. I believe both forms of entertainment can successfully exist together and meet different needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly discussed both perspectives—the convenience of online entertainment versus the economic and cultural value of physical venues—and provided a clear personal opinion throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between the convenience of streaming and the immersive experience of cinemas. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples or deeper analysis of the 'economic' impact mentioned in the prompt, such as the role of cinemas in urban regeneration or the tourism value of theatre districts, rather than just listing job roles.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore'. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The flow is smooth, and the transition between the two opposing views and your own opinion is handled naturally, ensuring the reader is never confused about the direction of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'digital age', 'immersive experience', 'employment opportunities', and 'preserve traditional art forms' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and natural, it is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or less common lexical items related to the arts and economics, such as 'cultural heritage', 'cinematic experience', or 'economic stimulus', to show greater flexibility and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a good control of grammatical structures. You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Although online entertainment has become extremely popular, theatres and cinemas still have an important place in modern society.' The punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The grammar is consistent throughout, with very few slips. To reach a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or more sophisticated conditional sentences, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
