Student answer (Band 5.5)

In modern times, the issue of the theatres and cinemas has become highly controversial. There are those who say that people no longer go to theaters or movie halls because they always watch movies online. However, other people believe that the theatres and cinemas are essential both economically and culturally. In this essay I will explain both side of the arguments and provide my overall opinion.

Generally speaking, there are two main reasons why people believe that the theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Perhaps the main reason why people are in favor of this idea is because individuals can save their important time and money. For example, when people go somewhere, a lot of their money and time is wasted. Moreover, they can watching movie on online. Because of which, they can save their money and sometimes they don't get a sit in theatres and cinemas. They may face various types of problems, such as transportation issues, accidents, and traffic congestion.

Despite these arguments, there is also a case for the idea that the theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. The main reason why people think this is a good idea is that the government can earn money easily. For instance, when people go to theatres and cinemas, they buy tickets; this improves the government's financial position. Additionally, theatres and cinemas was very famous places in the past. Right now, people do not go to theatres and cinemas. If people go to the theatres and cinemas, the can preserve the tradition.

In conclusion, it must be said that the theatres and cinemas has become a complex issue with no easy solutions. Having considered both sides of the issue. I would argue, theatres and cinemas remain important because they contribute to the economy, preserve cultural traditions, and provide a unique shared experience that cannot be fully replaced by digital platforms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention economic and cultural importance, the arguments remain superficial. For instance, the point about the government earning money from tickets is a bit simplistic. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'cultural' aspect by discussing the unique atmosphere of a cinema or the social role of theaters in communities. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting evidence lacks depth and specific detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Moreover,' 'Despite these arguments,' and 'In conclusion' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition from discussing transportation issues to the economic benefits of theaters is abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'theatres and cinemas' as a full phrase rather than using pronouns or synonyms to improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'important,' 'good idea,' and 'money.' There are also some minor collocation errors, such as 'they can watching movie on online' (should be 'they can watch movies online') and 'theatres and cinemas was very famous places' (should be 'were'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'digital streaming,' 'cultural heritage,' or 'financial viability.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('theatres and cinemas was'), incorrect verb forms ('they can watching'), and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some sentence fragments and run-on structures. To achieve a higher score, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of modal verbs and complex sentence connectors.
