Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that while some individuals think that in this electronic era, entertainment spots such as theatres and cinemas have lost their significance as people can access all resources on the internet, others claim that these venues still hold economic and cultural significance. Although both views have valid arguments, I firmly believe that these public places play a vital role in shaping the society and developing the economy.

In recent times, technology has advanced a lot and has made it more feasible for users to enjoy their favorite shows on various online platforms. The subscriptions of such platforms are offered at a very cheap rate thus people prefer buying them once instead of repeatedly booking expensive tickets for cinemas and theatres. Along with this, the web series released on online applications like Netflix have raised the standards as they are on another level of content creation. They sometimes overshadow the movies displayed in the cinemas and the plays presented at the theatres by achieving top ratings. Therefore, the current audience is more inclined towards online entertainment due to its low costs and quality content.

In contrast, the rest of the people contradict this perspective by stating that the cinemas and theatres still have enough potential to boost the economy as most of the older generations still choose to visit these places to enjoy themselves and spend time with their loved ones. This majority of people has a large proportion in the revenue generated by the entertainment sector, and this amount also contains a certain percentage which is payable to the government in form of taxes. These taxes later play a vital part in flourishing the economy and can also be used in the construction of more such venues to unite the society by public interaction and communication.

In conclusion, both the arguments make sense but they are still controversial. Although watching shows at home is a relatively cheaper option, but attending them in person is a far better experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, including both views and your own opinion. Your position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the economic argument regarding tax revenue. However, the conclusion is somewhat abrupt and fails to fully synthesize your opinion or summarize the main points effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that your conclusion provides a more comprehensive reflection on the arguments presented rather than just stating that the topic is controversial.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Along with this', and 'Therefore' to link your sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the third paragraph could be more precise. The flow is generally smooth, and the reader can easily follow your line of reasoning throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some flexibility. Phrases like 'lost their significance', 'current audience', and 'boost the economy' are used accurately. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'flourishing the economy' (which is less common than 'stimulating' or 'strengthening') and 'payable to the government in form of taxes'. While you attempt some less common vocabulary, there is room for more sophisticated, topic-specific collocations to enhance the precision of your arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'the rest of the people' (which sounds slightly unnatural) and the redundant use of 'but' in the final sentence ('Although... but...'). Despite these, your control over grammar and punctuation is good, and you show an ability to construct complex sentences to express your ideas clearly.
