Student answer (Band 6.0)

Films are an art form that is closely linked to our lives and play a vital role in shaping our thoughts. With technological advancements on the rise, online streaming websites have become quite popular among people. While some prefer watching films or movies online, some choose to visit cinemas. In this essay, we will be taking a keen look on both the sides of the coin.

A large strata of the public shares the belief that cinemas and theatres are no longer required since they can access movies and web series from the comfort of their homes through online streaming apps. People get to choose from a wide range of options, from different genres to different languages. Moreover, watching entertainment online gives people a personalised experience as they can pause the movie whenever they want and even rewind it if they missed a scene.

On the contrary, others argue that cinemas play a significant role in the economy. Not only do cinemas contribute to a film's profit, they also employ a plethora of people in jobs at the ticket counter, the food court and the cleaning staff among many other. In addition to this, theatres have a crucial cultural aspect as well. Theatres feature cultural dramas which provide an insight to our rich heritage which may get sidelined on online websites.

In my opinion, theatres and cinemas are an indispensable part of our lives. Apart from the economic and cultural aspect, I believe that it is very important to unwind and spend some quality time with one's friends and family outside the house. For example, my family and I have subscribed to Netflix, yet we choose to visit theatres atleast once in a month as it is a really fun way of bonding with each other.

To conclude, despite the fact that it takes just one click to watch movies while sitting in our bedrooms, theatres and cinemas have a role that goes beyond comfort. They help create jobs to tackle unemployment and keep one's culture alive, all the while strengthening one's relationships.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the economic benefits of cinemas and the convenience of streaming. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the development of the 'cultural' aspect could be more specific; for instance, mentioning how the shared experience of a cinema audience differs from solitary viewing would strengthen the argument. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the two viewpoints and the personal opinion is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the contrary', and 'In addition to this' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. The flow is natural, and the reader can easily follow the writer's line of reasoning from the introduction to the conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The writer uses some good collocations and topic-specific terms like 'technological advancements', 'online streaming', and 'indispensable part'. There are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'a large strata of the public' (strata is plural; 'a large stratum' or 'a large segment' would be more accurate) and 'insight to our rich heritage' (should be 'insight into'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the range is adequate to convey complex ideas clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'taking a keen look on both the sides' (should be 'at both sides') and 'atleast' (should be 'at least'). Punctuation is generally accurate. The use of complex structures, such as the 'Despite the fact that...' construction in the conclusion, shows a good command of language, and the errors present do not interfere with the clarity of the message.
