Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that theatres and cinemas have become less important because online platforms provide unlimited entertainment. However, others argue that these places continue to play a vital role in society. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe theatres and cinemas remain significant despite technological advancements.
To embark on, many people think theatres and cinemas are no longer essential due to the rapid growth of digital technology. Streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ allow viewers to watch films and television programmes anytime and anywhere. Moreover, online entertainment is often more affordable than buying cinema tickets, especially for families. It also offers greater convenience, as people can pause, rewind, or watch content from the comfort of their homes without travelling.
On the other hand, theatres and cinemas continue to be important for both cultural and economic reasons. Watching a movie on a large screen with advanced sound systems provides an experience that cannot be fully replicated at home. Furthermore, theatres preserve traditional performing arts, while cinemas and theatres create employment opportunities for actors, technicians, directors, and many other workers. In my opinion, although online platforms are becoming increasingly popular, they cannot replace the unique atmosphere, social interaction, and cultural value offered by these venues.
In conclusion, while digital entertainment has made watching films more convenient and accessible, I believe that theatres and cinemas still play an essential role in preserving culture, creating jobs, and providing a memorable entertainment experience. Therefore, they are likely to remain relevant in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. However, the development of the arguments is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention economic and cultural importance, these points could be further extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points. To improve, aim to expand on your supporting arguments with more detailed evidence or hypothetical scenarios to demonstrate a more thorough exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' effectively. However, the transition 'To embark on' in the second paragraph is unnatural and incorrect in this context; a better choice would be 'To begin with' or 'Firstly'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and referencing is generally clear throughout the text. The overall flow is smooth, though the mechanical nature of some transitions prevents a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'technological advancements', 'replicated', and 'accessible' correctly. The language is generally natural and precise enough to convey your meaning without difficulty. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items, such as 'ubiquitous', 'immersive', or 'economic viability', to show greater flexibility and precision. Your current vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the variety and nuance required for the highest bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although online platforms are becoming increasingly popular, they cannot replace...'. The grammar is generally accurate, and punctuation is used correctly. There are very few errors, and those present do not interfere with the reader's understanding. You demonstrate good control over complex structures, which is a strength. To improve further, ensure that all introductory phrases are idiomatic, as seen with the 'To embark on' error. Overall, the grammatical control is solid and supports clear communication throughout the response.
