Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the digital age people argue if theatres and cinemas are still economically and culturally important as we can watch all the entertainment online. Which I agree that it’s not necessary important as of now.

Well from my perspective I would say that, going to cinemas and theaters are a complete waste of time and resources. Because, of the stress of choosing an outfit, buy tickets and boarding a train or any means of transportation. Whereas, you can you can watch these movies from the comfort of your home, in a dark room in your comfort and your popcorn you got from the store earlier, on your preferred gadget and you are set to go. For example, as an introverted person that enjoys my own company. Any time any day Im choosing this option. And I believe every other introvert out there agrees with me.

On the other hand, visiting the cinema and theatres is quite important economically and culturally. Moreover, to modern age families I would say it’s important . To help family members connect on a deeper level, parents prioritizing their kids well being and fun by taking them to visit places outside the home , hereby, these visits keeps the cinema and theatres running as they are also a source of patronage to them .

So yes I would say that despite this modern day, cinema and theatre is still economically and culturally superior important.

Conclusively, I would say both points are valid . But I support the motion that visiting the cinema and theater are not economically and culturally necessary.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. The argument against cinemas is based on personal preference (introversion) rather than broader economic or cultural analysis, which limits the depth of the response. Furthermore, the conclusion contradicts the body paragraph regarding the importance of cinemas, leading to a lack of clarity in the final position. To improve, ensure that arguments are supported by objective reasoning rather than purely subjective experiences and maintain a consistent stance throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by the contradictory conclusion. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', 'Conclusively'), they are sometimes used incorrectly or in a way that does not reflect the actual flow of ideas. For instance, the transition to the second body paragraph is abrupt, and the final summary does not logically follow the points raised in the preceding paragraph. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, making the relationship between sentences feel mechanical rather than fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. The student relies on basic phrasing such as 'complete waste of time' and 'set to go'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'superior important' and 'hereby, these visits keeps', which indicate a limited grasp of collocations and grammatical function. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to incorporate more academic vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'cultural preservation', 'economic viability', or 'digital transformation', and focus on using words in their correct grammatical context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include sentence fragments ('Which I agree that...'), subject-verb agreement errors ('these visits keeps'), and punctuation mistakes, such as the unnecessary use of commas after 'Because' and 'hereby'. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the text from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and avoiding sentence fragments would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
