Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays many people believe that theatres and cinemas are no longer important as all the entertainment material is present online while others still advocate for the economic and cultural value of these places. I am of the opinion that theaters and cinemas are important in many ways compared to the online viewing experience.

As the individuals are mostly busy with their daily life routines, they don't have much time to visit these places. So they prefer to watch everything online according to their own interests. Adding to this, higher fuel prices has made it extremely difficult for people to travel and watch movies in cinemas and theatres. In order to save money, people mostly rely on online materials. For instance, in Pakistan, most of the locals cannot afford to go to these entertainment points and enjoy this experience.

In contrast, cinemas and theatres still retain their importance both economically and culturally. People tend to spend more entertaining time with their family and friends especially on festivals and special occasions. Cinemas and theatres also serve the economy of a nation. In some countries, such as the UK and the US, theaters and cinemas account for massive financial revenues, directly benefitting the local economy and the production houses. This is possible by selling the tickets of movies and stage shows. Another example is India, where cinemas and theatres are the major sources of their economy and they generate a huge income from entertainment.

In conclusion, I advocate for the point that people are mostly relying on digital tools to watch all the entertainment, however they still recognize their importance both in economic and cultural point of view. Hence, cinemas, theaters and physical entertainment places will retain their own importance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic impact and the convenience of digital media. However, the development is somewhat uneven; the arguments regarding the economic importance of cinemas in the UK, US, and India are a bit repetitive and could have been more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, but the conclusion is slightly weak as it merely restates the prompt rather than synthesizing the arguments effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In contrast', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing within paragraphs could be more fluid. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the development of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'financial revenues', 'production houses', and 'digital tools'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'entertainment points' or 'entertaining time'. To improve, the student should aim for more precise and sophisticated academic vocabulary to demonstrate a wider range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'higher fuel prices has made' (subject-verb agreement) and 'selling the tickets of movies' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally correct, but there is a lack of more sophisticated complex structures that would elevate the score. The majority of sentences are error-free, but the control over more complex grammar is not yet consistent enough for a higher band.
