Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views and provides an opinion, but the development is inconsistent. The introduction is confusing and fails to clearly outline the two perspectives. While the body paragraphs attempt to discuss the importance of cinemas and the benefits of online viewing, the arguments are often repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the claim that cinemas are 'wasting of time' is not well-supported or logically linked to the economic argument. Furthermore, the student's final opinion is contradictory, as the conclusion states both that they believe in cinemas and then immediately switches to supporting online entertainment. This lack of clarity in the position significantly impacts the overall task response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is frequently disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', but they are often applied mechanically or incorrectly. For example, the transition into the second body paragraph is abrupt, and the concluding sentences are repetitive and confusing. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's train of thought. The overall structure lacks the logical flow required for higher bands, as the ideas within paragraphs do not always connect smoothly to the main topic sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive, which restricts the ability to convey complex ideas. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'digital age watch theatres in online' and 'wasting of travel expenses'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles to use more precise or academic terminology. While the meaning is generally discernible, the lack of variety and the persistent errors in word formation (e.g., 'theatres and cinemas as compared to watch online') mean that the lexical range is only minimally adequate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are persistent issues with sentence structure, such as 'In the modern era of the people watch theatres', which is grammatically incoherent. Subject-verb agreement, article usage, and prepositional errors are pervasive throughout the text. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, these are almost always faulty, leading to confusion. The majority of sentences contain errors, and the lack of control over basic syntax prevents the essay from reaching a higher band score.
