Student answer (Band 6.0)

According to some people theatres and cinemas are no longer needed in this digital era, but for some people they are still important. In this essay we will dive into the debate of whether theatres and cinemas are important or not?

Due to the introduction of OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus, many people tend to watch movies from the comfort of their home. These people argue that why they should pay a certain amount of money to a cinema or theatre when they can just spend less on a monthly subscription and watch unlimited movies. For example, we want to watch a movie together, for that we have two options. Option 1, we both can pay x amount of money for a ticket in cenima, or in option 2, we can buy an OTT platform subscription and watch the same movie in our home.

In contrast, the other group which supports cinema and theatre have more artistic value, they believe that the people who played the theatre or director who poured his/her heart and soul into the direction, so that the movie or play can be seen as perfect as it could be, deserves our ticket. For example, if a group of people who has more artistic value comes to know that there will be a release from a famous director, they don't think that okay! I will watch it at home, instead they immediately look for tickets and book them.

In conclusion, I would say that people who doesn't watch movies very often or watch occasionally prefer to watch movies at home and are believer of theatre and cinema not being important, but the people who watches movies oftenly or daily love to watch them on the bigger screen and in abundance of people like them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both viewpoints and provides a personal opinion, though the development is somewhat superficial. The arguments regarding OTT platforms are clear, but the discussion on the economic and cultural importance of cinemas is underdeveloped. The conclusion mentions your opinion, but it is not clearly stated as a distinct position throughout the essay. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides more depth and specific examples, and make your own stance more explicit in the introduction and conclusion. The response covers all parts of the prompt, but the depth of analysis is limited, which prevents it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'For example', 'In contrast'). Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the shift from 'we' to 'these people' is slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the flow and coherence of the writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'important', 'watch', and 'money'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'abundance of people' instead of 'a crowd' or 'large audience', and 'oftenly' which is not a standard adverb. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to the topic, such as 'cinematic experience', 'cultural significance', or 'convenience of streaming services'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('people who doesn't watch', 'people who watches') and awkward phrasing ('the people who played the theatre'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and misuse of commas. To achieve a higher score, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, refining complex sentence structures, and proofreading for basic grammatical slips.
