Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people hold the belief that in the new generation, theatres and cinemas are not relevant for watching entertainment movies on online platforms. However, other people are averse to it and believe that they are still important both economically and culturally. I agree with the former view.

At the outset, the most plausible reason to support my opinion is that people have very busy lifestyles and schedules because they don't have the time to go physically and watch movies, so rather than going outside, people prefer online platforms. Therefore, it's time-saving, convenient and saves money. For instance, people are aware of online platforms like Netflix and YouTube Premium. It saves time and money on travel.

On the other hand, I can understand that some people hold the belief that theatres and cinemas are still important economically because they believe that it is the main source of revenue for the government and the film industry. Nonetheless, online platforms also pay taxes to the government and contribute to the economy. For example, Netflix and Amazon Prime pay significant amounts of money to the government, and it is totally digital.

In conclusion, although people from an early age prefer to go to cinemas for entertainment purposes, because of the digital era, the majority of the population prefers to watch online rather than in cinemas. It's suitable for their convenience and finances.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the essay fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the arguments regarding convenience and economic contribution are relevant, they are somewhat superficial and lack the depth required for a higher band. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. To improve, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations and specific examples to ensure the response is sufficiently developed and meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'At the outset', 'On the other hand', and 'Nonetheless' are used to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical, and the transitions between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure feels a bit repetitive due to the limited length of the essay. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more sophisticated flow between sentences would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks range and sophistication. You rely on common phrases like 'people have very busy lifestyles' and 'saves time and money'. While the meaning is clear, there is little attempt to use less common or more precise lexical items. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to the film industry, digital media, and economic impact. Avoid repeating the same words and try to use synonyms or more academic collocations to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'theatres and cinemas are not relevant for watching entertainment movies on online platforms', which is slightly awkward. Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentences could be structured more effectively to improve clarity. While the errors do not impede communication, the range of structures is somewhat limited. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while ensuring accuracy in your sentence construction.
