Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many argue that online planforms are more essential than that of movie theatres and cinemas as online binging does not require traveling to cinema halls or require separate tickets. On the other hand, some people think cinema halls are significant in both economic and cultural sectors. I firmly agree with this as visiting theatres or cinema halls help the society financially and culturally by creating more scope for earnings and preserving culture.

Online entertainments does not require the purchase of extra tickets or travelling. Most of the time people can buy subscriptions and watch many movies or series altogether and rewatch as much as they want. This is one to biggest convenience of OTT platforms. A classic example would be, Netflix or Amazon only needs monthly or yearly subscription for a tiny amount but includes access to numerous shows. The existence of online platforms like these make the theatres less important.

Conversely, cinema halls and theatres help the community and culture by increasing the scope of earning money for the artists. I agree with this as online platforms require less payment but sometimes many artists working for the theatre do not get paid well and end up leaving their profession, this results in many cultural plays nonexistence. Moreover, these cinema halls also help the society financially by their income through tickets. For instance, in China cinema halls and theatres for cultural opera are always fully packed, this results in massive growth in entertainment industry and saving thousand of years old operas till this date.

In conclusion, there are a number of reasons why theatre and cinema halls can be deemed less significant. However, I believe cinema halls and theatres are essential as these helps to preserve culture and help the economy financially.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience of streaming services versus the economic and cultural value of physical venues. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the argument for theatres is supported by the example of Chinese opera, the discussion on online platforms is a bit repetitive, focusing heavily on cost. To reach a higher band, the student should expand on the 'cultural' aspect of the first view or provide more nuanced analysis of how the digital age impacts the social experience of cinema-going, rather than just focusing on financial convenience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is clear, and the writer uses cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand,' 'Conversely,' and 'Moreover' to link arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the vague use of 'this' in the opening paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow further.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'nonexistence' and 'deemed.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'online planforms,' 'online binging,' and 'many cultural plays nonexistence.' The phrase 'tiny amount' is also too informal for an academic essay. While the meaning is always clear, the range is somewhat limited, and the precision of word choice needs improvement to move into the higher bands. Focusing on more academic collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Online entertainments does not,' 'these helps to preserve') and article usage ('the entertainment industry,' 'saving thousand of years'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and minor errors in pluralization. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The student should focus on proofreading for basic agreement and pluralization errors to improve accuracy.
