Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and often repetitive. The essay fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the depth of the discussion. Many points, such as the benefits of digital entertainment, are mentioned but not sufficiently supported with clear examples or logical expansion. The lack of word count prevents a full exploration of the topic, leading to a superficial treatment of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. Cohesive devices are used in a very mechanical and sometimes inaccurate way, such as the repetitive use of 'This' to start sentences. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's train of thought. While there is an attempt to use transition words like 'However' and 'To conclude', the overall flow is hindered by the lack of logical links between sentences and the limited development of the paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'good', 'funny', and 'advantage'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'This 2 opinions think own positive' and 'Movie watch understand better'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas with precision. The student struggles to use less common lexical items, and the errors in word formation and usage occasionally impede the reader's ability to grasp the intended meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('theatres and cinemas is'), missing articles, and awkward sentence structures. There is a lack of complex sentence forms, and the simple sentences used often contain errors that affect clarity. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces and repeated words ('If If'). These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and demonstrate a limited control over basic grammatical structures, preventing the essay from reaching a higher band score.
