Student answer (Band 8.0)

The widespread availability of digital streaming services has changed how audiences consume entertainment, leading some to argue that physical theatres and cinemas have lost their relevance. However, others believe these venues remain vital cultural and economic pillars. I agree that while online platforms offer unprecedented convenience, physical venues provide distinct values that digital media cannot replicate.

On the one hand, critics argue that online streaming offers convenience and variety that traditional venues cannot match. With platforms like Netflix and YouTube, viewers can access thousands of films, plays, and live recordings instantly from their homes at a fraction of the cost. For many, avoiding overpriced tickets, travel, and schedule constraints makes digital entertainment a far more appealing and practical option for daily leisure.

On the other hand, traditional venues hold immense economic and cultural value. Culturally, theatres and cinemas offer a shared, immersive experience that fosters social connection and preserves artistic heritage. Watching a movie on a grand screen or viewing a live theatrical performance creates a sense of community engagement and emotional resonance that solitary home viewing lacks. Economically, these institutions drive local economies by generating employment for production crews, performers, and service staff, while also boosting surrounding businesses such as restaurants and public transport.

In conclusion, while digital platforms have made entertainment more accessible and convenient, they cannot fully replace the physical venues. Theatres and cinemas continue to play a crucial role in enriching local cultures, creating jobs, and offering shared social experiences that digital media simply cannot duplicate.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. You have clearly presented both sides of the argument—the convenience of digital streaming versus the cultural and economic significance of physical venues—and maintained a consistent personal position throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between the 'shared, immersive experience' of cinemas and the 'solitary' nature of home viewing. To reach a higher band, you could provide a more specific real-world example, such as the impact of a local theatre on a specific community or the economic data regarding cinema attendance, to further substantiate your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'.
