Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, online entertainment has become increasingly popular and people can consume entertainment from several online platforms. While some people believe theatres and cinemas are still plays a vital role in the digital age and they both have economic and cultural significance. This essay will discuss both the views before explaining why i believe traditional venues remain important.

To commence with the expanding online platforms that provide different kinds of entertainment making cinemas and theatres least important. Nowadays, a large number of people find more convenient to watch movies, series or shows on applications such as Netflix, Amazon prime and youtube. Furthermore, people do not have to travel or visit cinemas to watch their favourite shows. For example, Netflix provides enormous number of entertainment programmes and other series in almost every language which makes more convenient for the people to watch online. Therefore, it saves cost spending on booking tickets and travel expense.

On the other hand, cinemas and theatres continue to play crucial role in both the economy and culture. Firstly, these venues provide employment opportunities for many unemployed people. Moreover, if people spend money to book tickets for cinema shows this will ultimately boost the economy of a country. Secondly, theatres in particular help preserve cultural traditions by providing a platform for live performances, regional languages and traditional art forms. For instance, local theatre productions can showcase a country's history and customs to younger generations, helping to maintain cultural heritage. Consequently, eliminating these venues completely could negative economic and cultural effects.

In conclusion, although online entertainment has made theatres and cinemas less essential because of its convenience and accessibility, I believe that traditional venues are still important. Their contribution to employment and economic activity means that they should continue to coexist with digital entertainment rather than be replaced by it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. Your ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly in the second and third body paragraphs. However, the introduction is slightly underdeveloped; the sentence 'While some people believe theatres and cinemas are still plays a vital role...' is grammatically fragmented and lacks a clear main clause to contrast with the online entertainment argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that your thesis statement is fully articulated and that your arguments are consistently supported with more specific, nuanced examples rather than general statements about employment or cost.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for instance, the transition between the first and second paragraph could be smoother. The use of cohesive devices is generally accurate, but occasionally feels slightly mechanical. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'economic and cultural significance', 'employment opportunities', and 'cultural heritage'. There are some instances of slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'enormous number of entertainment programmes' (which should be 'an enormous number') and 'could negative economic and cultural effects' (missing a verb like 'have'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word forms are consistently correct in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'theatres and cinemas are still plays a vital role' contains a subject-verb agreement error, and 'making cinemas and theatres least important' is grammatically incomplete. Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed with accurate subordinate clauses.
